The Pechakola community, located beside the Jamuna River, had been facing a serious social problem for a long time. Especially after sunset, the only road in the community became dangerous and unsafe. Because of the darkness, incidents of theft and robbery occurred, and children, adolescents, women, and elderly people lived in constant fear. Many people avoided going outside in the evening unless it was absolutely necessary. Once, an incident happened that almost led to the loss of a life, which deeply shook the entire community. Even after that, no one took initiative to solve the problem for a long time.

The situation began to change when work started in the Pechakola community through the SALT CLCP process. At first, community members were not used to sitting together and discussing their problems. Gradually, the SALT process created a space for open conversation. During this time, the “Cholo Egiye Jai” youth team brought forward this long-standing problem of their community. They openly shared their experiences, fears, and realities, and started dreaming of a safer community.

As discussions continued, the issue of the dark road came up again and again. Although no one was initially ready to take direct action, the youth slowly decided to take responsibility. They began thinking about how they could solve the problem using their own capacity and the resources available within the community. From this thinking, they decided to install a lamppost on the road.

Then they started looking for necessary materials. During this process, the youth noticed a lamppost lying unused and neglected on one side of the community for a long time. They decided to reuse it. They discussed the idea with elderly members and community leaders, and with everyone’s agreement, the lamppost was brought and installed on the road.

The next challenge was arranging the electricity connection and other required materials. The youth did not stop there. They sat with community leaders and elders and discussed the issue again. As a result, Nasir Uddin Babu from the community and local businessman Mr. Ahad showed interest in supporting the initiative. With their help, electricity connection and necessary materials were arranged.

As a result, under the leadership of the youth and with the collective participation of the community, a long-standing major problem was solved. Today, that lamppost is not just a light, but a blessing for the entire community. Where there was darkness and fear before, there is now light and safety. Children, adolescents, women, and elderly people can now move safely and freely in the evening.

This initiative proves that change does not come from outside. When a community starts to see its problems as its own and uses its own resources and strengths, sustainable change becomes possible. The Pechakola community’s initiative is a clear example of true community-led action, where a small step brought a big change to the lives of many.

যমুনা নদীর পাশে অবস্থিত পেচাঁকোলা কমিউনিটি দীর্ঘদিন ধরে সামাজিক একটি সমস্যার মধ্য দিয়ে যাচ্ছিল। বিশেষ করে কমিউনিটির একমাত্র রাস্তাটি সন্ধ্যা নামার পর ভয়ংকর ও অনিরাপদ হয়ে উঠত। অন্ধকারের কারণে চুরি-ডাকাতির ঘটনা ঘটত, আর শিশু, কিশোর-কিশোরী, নারী ও বয়স্করা প্রতিনিয়ত আতঙ্কের মধ্যে থাকত। অনেক সময় প্রয়োজন না হলে মানুষ সন্ধ্যার পর বাইরে বের হতো না। একবার এমন একটি ঘটনাও ঘটেছিল, যা মানুষের জীবননাশের পর্যায়ে পৌঁছায় এবং পুরো কমিউনিটিকে গভীরভাবে নাড়িয়ে দেয়। তবুও দীর্ঘদিন ধরে কেউ এই সমস্যার সমাধানে উদ্যোগ নেয়নি।

এই পরিস্থিতির পরিবর্তন শুরু হয় যখন SALT CLCP প্রক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে পেচাঁকোলা কমিউনিটিতে কাজ শুরু হয়। শুরুতে কমিউনিটির মানুষজন একসাথে বসে সমস্যা নিয়ে আলোচনা করতে অভ্যস্ত ছিল না। তবে ধীরে ধীরে SALT প্রক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে কথোপকথনের জায়গা তৈরি হয়। এখানেই ‘চলো এগিয়ে যাই’ ইয়ুথ টিম তাদের কমিউনিটির এই দীর্ঘদিনের সমস্যাটি সামনে নিয়ে আসে। তারা নিজেদের অভিজ্ঞতা, ভয় ও বাস্তবতার কথা খোলাখুলিভাবে শেয়ার করে এবং একটি নিরাপদ কমিউনিটির স্বপ্ন আঁকতে শুরু করে।

আলোচনার ধারাবাহিকতায় বারবার অন্ধকার রাস্তাটির বিষয়টি সামনে আসতে থাকে। যদিও শুরুতে কেউ সরাসরি উদ্যোগ নিতে আগ্রহী ছিল না, তবুও ইয়ুথরা ধীরে ধীরে দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়। তারা ভাবতে শুরু করে, কীভাবে নিজেদের সামর্থ্য ও কমিউনিটির ভেতরের সম্পদ ব্যবহার করে সমস্যাটির সমাধান করা যায়। এই চিন্তা থেকেই তারা সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়, রাস্তায় একটি ল্যাম্পপোস্ট স্থাপন করবে।

এরপর শুরু হয় প্রয়োজনীয় উপকরণ খোঁজার কাজ। তখন ইয়ুথরা লক্ষ্য করে, কমিউনিটির এক পাশে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে অবহেলায় পড়ে থাকা একটি ল্যাম্পপোস্ট রয়েছে। তারা সেটিকেই ব্যবহার করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়। বিষয়টি নিয়ে তারা কমিউনিটির বয়স্কদের ও নেতৃস্থানীয় ব্যক্তিদের সঙ্গে আলোচনা করে। সবার সম্মতিতে ল্যাম্পপোস্টটি তুলে এনে রাস্তায় স্থাপন করা হয়।

পরবর্তী চ্যালেঞ্জ ছিল বিদ্যুৎ সংযোগ ও অন্যান্য প্রয়োজনীয় ম্যাটেরিয়াল সংগ্রহ করা। এখানেও ইয়ুথদের উদ্যোগ থেমে থাকেনি। তারা কমিউনিটির লিডার ও বয়স্কদের সঙ্গে বসে আলোচনা করে। এই আলোচনার ফলেই কমিউনিটির নাসির উদ্দিন বাবু এবং স্থানীয় ব্যবসায়ী জনাব আহাদ সাহেব সহযোগিতার আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করেন। তাদের সহায়তায় বিদ্যুৎ সংযোগ ও প্রয়োজনীয় উপকরণ নিশ্চিত করা সম্ভব হয়।

ফলে, ইয়ুথদের নেতৃত্বে এবং কমিউনিটির মানুষের সম্মিলিত অংশগ্রহণে দীর্ঘদিনের একটি বড় সমস্যা সমাধান হয়। আজ সেই ল্যাম্পপোস্ট শুধু একটি আলো নয়, বরং পুরো কমিউনিটির জন্য আশীর্বাদ হয়ে উঠেছে। যেখানে আগে অন্ধকার ও ভয় ছিল, সেখানে এখন আলো ও নিরাপত্তা। শিশু, কিশোর-কিশোরী, নারী এবং বয়স্করা নির্বিঘ্নে ও নিরাপদে সন্ধ্যার পর চলাচল করতে পারছে।

এই উদ্যোগটি প্রমাণ করে, পরিবর্তন বাইরে থেকে এসে হয় না। যখন কমিউনিটি নিজের সমস্যাকে নিজের বলে ভাবতে শেখে এবং নিজের সম্পদ ও শক্তিকে কাজে লাগায়, তখনই টেকসই পরিবর্তন সম্ভব হয়। পেচাঁকোলা কমিউনিটির এই উদ্যোগ একটি স্পষ্ট উদাহরণ এটি সত্যিকারের community-led action, যা একটি ছোট উদ্যোগের মাধ্যমে পুরো কমিউনিটির জীবনে বড় পরিবর্তন এনেছে।
