Steps of Dream Building Using SALT & compared to WoT

Poonam Mishra from the State of Uttar Pradesh in India; a teacher and a social worker. shared recently how the children in a school drew their  dream building process, using the steps of SALT (WoW) and Way of Thinking (WoT) so as to finally lead up to Goal setting or making up their dream, as shown in the attached picture.

The steps depicted in the picture are:

6) Goal Setting

5) Can do Attitude

1) Using SALT (WoW)

Using the six steps that lead to Goal setting as the rows, with the ways of thinking (WoT) in the columns we draw up a table with the intersecting cells containing the explanation as to how each step of the steps of the dream building is influenced by the elements of the Way of thinking(WoT) The Key elements of the Way of thinking(WoT) we used in the column headings are:

a.       Building on Commonalities: Recognizing and valuing shared experiences, values, and aspirations within and between communities.

b.      Our Common Humanity: Acknowledging the interconnectedness of all people and the shared responsibility for creating a just and equitable world.

c.       Learning from Differences: Valuing diversity and learning from the unique perspectives and experiences of others.

d.      Unlearning of the Expert: Recognizing that true knowledge and wisdom reside within the community itself.

Thus we created a table illustrating how the "Way of Thinking" (WoT) elements influence each step towards Goal Setting as depicted in the children's drawing.

Table: Way of Thinking and Steps Towards Goal Setting:

Steps Towards Goal Setting Building on Commonalities Our Common Humanity Learning from Differences Unlearning of the Expert
1. Using SALT (WoW) Recognizing shared values within the community can guide the selection of appropriate SALT principles for individual and collective growth. Understanding that everyone has the potential for growth and development, regardless of background. Learning from diverse perspectives within the community and beyond can enrich the application of SALT principles. Acknowledging the inherent wisdom and knowledge within the community, rather than relying solely on external experts.
2. Develop Thought Process (WoT) Recognizing shared values and aspirations can inform the development of a positive and empowering mindset. Understanding that individual thoughts and beliefs are interconnected with the broader human experience. Learning from diverse perspectives can broaden individual thought processes and challenge limiting beliefs. Recognizing that true wisdom lies within oneself and the collective wisdom of the community.
3. Developing Positive Thoughts Recognizing shared experiences of overcoming challenges can foster a positive and hopeful outlook. Understanding that everyone faces challenges and that overcoming them is a shared human experience. Learning from the diverse strategies and approaches used by others to overcome challenges. Acknowledging that positive thinking and self-belief are essential for personal growth, rather than relying solely on external validation.
4. Realizing Own Strength Recognizing and valuing the unique strengths and talents within the community can inspire individuals to identify and develop their own strengths. Understanding that everyone possesses unique strengths and talents that can contribute to the betterment of society. Learning from the diverse ways in which others leverage their strengths can inspire and motivate individuals. Acknowledging that true strength lies within oneself and the community, rather than relying on external validation or external support.
5. Can Do Attitude Recognizing shared successes within the community can foster a belief in the collective ability to achieve goals. Understanding that everyone has the potential to achieve their goals, regardless of their background or circumstances. Learning from the diverse challenges and successes of others can build confidence and resilience. Acknowledging that the community itself holds the key to achieving its goals, rather than relying solely on external expertise.
6. Goal Setting Recognizing shared aspirations within the community can inspire individuals to set meaningful and ambitious goals. Understanding that individual goals are interconnected with the well-being of the community and the larger world. Learning from the diverse goals and aspirations of others can broaden individual perspectives and inspire new possibilities. Acknowledging that the community itself is the ultimate authority in defining and setting its own goals.

Hope this table provides a helpful illustration of how the "Way of Thinking" elements influence each step towards Goal Setting within the CLCP framework.

Disclaimer:

It is crucial to emphasize that the Steps of the Dream Building, as discussed in this document, does not imply or suggest that these are the only possible steps, or shortcoming in other steps of dream building developed by other groups, using the Community Led Development practices like SALT (WoW) and Way of Thinking (WoT) within the CLCP framework. Accordingly, the authors acknowledge there could be other steps, each having their own merits.

Moreover, presented here the influence by the Way of Thinking on the steps of the Dream Building reflects only one lens through which the Dream Building Steps have been viewed and influences extracted. Accordingly, the influence of other catalyzers can similarly thus be examined.
