Partnering to Address HIV/AIDS: Bangladesh
As part of this effort to ensure the right to HIV/AIDS education and health care services, CARE-Bangladesh designed and implemented a behavioural change initiative designed to reach out to transport workers, especially truckers. During the project's initial period, CARE-Bangladesh staff worked to develop a trusting relationship with union leaders by engaging in discussion, advocacy, and the sharing of information. Peers - transport workers themselves - helped identify areas for outreach, ensured cultural appropriateness of the prevention message, and served as outreach workers. As the partnership grew, the union and its leaders contributed to and took responsibility for programme activities. "Union leaders give time and moral support during the opening and graduation ceremonies of the Volunteer Peer Educator training course. Peer educators are motivated to participate more actively in the training process after they hear a union leader praise their role and contribution; rec!
 eiving a certificate from their union leader also bestows a sense of prestige."

I enjoyed watching the video. Thanks! I know the Kenya team uses these wellness centres for SALT visits with a mixed group of PLHIV, truck drivers and sex workers. I found this very striking. Would the Kenyan team like to share if in any way community contributes to running or management of these centres. Asante.

ETHIOPIA: Transport sector launches HIV policy

The Ethiopian government has unveiled an HIV policy for its transport sector, which has grown significantly in recent years alongside the rapidly expanding road network.

"Various national studies have shown that those working across the transport sector - especially drivers and their assistants - are vulnerable to HIV infection as they spend considerable time away from their families," said Ethiopia's transport authority director Kassahun Hailemariam.

The country's Federal Transport Authority (FTA) and commercial transporters jointly issued the policy in December. It sets up a national taskforce to raise funds from state and non-state actors to finance projects, including condom distribution, and helping transport staff and family members living with the virus.

The government has earmarked 2 percent of the FTA's annual budget to work towards an HIV-free transport sector. Although exact figures for the number of transport workers - from drivers to drivers' assistants and loaders - are hard to come by, an FTA official said the figure was "in the tens of thousands".

I am very pleased to welcome Priya from Transport Corporation of India Foundation (TCIF) in this group! With Shekhar, Priya has provided strong support to the Indian team in its work on India-Kenya initiative, arranging SALT visits, sending material for Kenya team etc. Priya is the communication officer in TCIF. Another person whom I would like to thank is Deepa who heads Child Survival India Delhi (CSI) and hosted our SALT Visits in Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, Delhi.
