Dear Members,

Thank you for sharing. Unfortunately Ugandan youth are not eligible for UNFPA youth program. This would have been an equal opportunity for them.

Are you a young advocate?

The Young Advocates for Social Change Award was established by Global Health Strategies to honor exceptional young leaders and innovators working to improve the public good.

The award is open to individuals 25 years of age or younger who have contributed to an advocacy or communications project related to a public interest issue.

Application Deadline is 1 April 2011

The grand prize winner will be awarded $5,000 at an advocacy luncheon in New York City.

Background

Since its founding in 2002, Global Health Strategies (GHS) has worked with an impressive group of young, talented, and committed individuals. To highlight the important advocacy work that so many young people are currently leading, GHS will award a $5,000 prize to a young adult who has contributed to a communication or advocacy project to improve the public good. With this award, GHS hopes to foster the growth of this generation’s young leaders, who are driving positive change in the world.

Who Should Apply

The contest is open to individuals 25 years of age or younger. Keeping with GHS’ approach to improving the well-being of people around the world, projects should be advocacy- or communications-related and can pertain to issues such as health, the environment, human rights, or education. Examples of submissions might include:

  • A grassroots campaign using Facebook to raise awareness about childhood pneumonia and with an online petition asking lawmakers to invest in prevention.
  • An on-campus fundraising effort for Pakistani flood victims using YouTube to inform satellite locations on how to organize the event.
  • A ballot write-in initiative to elect an environmentally-conscious state senator.
  • A car wash to raise money for earthquake victims in Haiti

Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated according to their project’s impact, the creativity of their approach, and the strategies used to achieve their goal. Projects must have taken place within the last two years and can be completed or ongoing.

Award Details

The winner will be awarded a $5,000 prize at an advocacy luncheon in New York City. Five honorable mentions will also be awarded. All of the finalists’ profiles and advocacy projects will be featured on the GHS website.

To Apply

All candidates must submit an application form in addition to an 800-word essay or two-minute YouTube video. Essay/video submissions should answer the following questions:

1) What did you do? Describe your project in detail.

What were your goals? Where was it done? What was the target population/who was your audience?  How long did it last? Was this part of a larger project?

2) How did you do it? Include details on how you went about your work.

How did you come up with the idea? What challenges did you face? How did you communicate the importance of your cause? Did you use any digital or social media in your project? How was your approach innovative or creative?

3) What did you accomplish? Describe the impact of your project.

How do you measure progress of your work? What have been some of the outcomes? Have you achieved the goals you initially laid out, and how have they changed over time?

Application Submission

Click here to view the application form.

Completed applications should be e-mailed to youngadvocates@globalhealthstrategies.com, along with the following:

  • Written submissions: Send your essay along with your application form to the e-mail above.
  • Video submissions: Upload your video to YouTube and include the URL in your application form.

All application materials must be submitted by 1 April 2011.

FYI,

ASIA PACIFIC UNFPA SPECIAL YOUTH PROGRAMME. DEADLINE JAN 20TH.

Dear colleagues,

As you know, previously HQ has hosted youth fellows (1-2 from Asia Pacific) for 4 months in New York and then they have worked for 4 months in their UNFPA CO in the country of origin
We are now proposing to alter the programme in this region - thank you to Jeehan, Ne Win, Retha, Aradhana, Sally, Urnaa, Adriu, Viengthong, Sadia  and Gina for your feedback and suggestions.

After discussions with Prateek in HQ, we now hope that we can fund 3-4 young people with the same HQ funds (previously supporting 1-2 in New York)  to have an orientation at APRO Bangkok (probably 2 weeks) then approx 4 months in another country in the region, and approx 4 months at the CO in their own country.  Expenses and a living allowance would be provided for each part of this  programme.

The vacancy announcement is copied below, incorporating the above information. Could you distribute to young people and youth organisations in your country
 :

Members of UNFPA/UN YAPs and YPEER can definitely apply, but other young people are encouraged to apply, including young people from minority groups and marginalised populations

We would be asking that if a person is selected from your country, that you would be able to provide supervision for that young person for 4 months in your country office, but also that you would be willing to host another young person from another country for 4 months  (expenses covered by UNFPA HQ). We can discuss whether it would work better to have the two young people at the same time (so they can support each other and exchange experience) or one at a time.

We are just learning in this process, so please let me know if you have other suggestions. In future years, we can adapt the model - suggestions have included a biregional orientation (eg with Eastern Europe), exchange with countries in other regions, and additional numbers of fellows if APRO and CO are able to raise funds to cost share with HQ

Best regards

Jo

Hi all I am yda de guia the present president of PEER ED ME PAMAC-Q or Peer Educators Movement for Empowerment as Myrna introduced our organization we are hoping to exchange our experiences with the other countries and willing to be part of the youth competence as we are already a member of PINOY COMPETENCE, for us we really learn a lot from PINOY COMPETENCE and one of our learnings was to find out resources from the community itself and its strength , in this way we can still make our activities successful and also we also strengthen Local Government unit Partnership so that we can also use other facilities or may request financial assistance if there is, maybe for now this is how we make our organization sustainable without any external support or funding...I also want to thanked HUI XIN NG for that wonderful comment hope we can exchange our experiences even here in this email or hope somebody from you can visit us here in manila....just like SALT VISIT thanks.

Dear All,

This group was formed due to the huge demand by those interested in youth issues for a place to exchange experiences and thoughts. It was also agreed  that different team members will facilitate the youth competence group in rotation.

I am happy to inform you that Korey Anthony Chisholm from Guyana will facilitate the group for the coming two weeks. He works in different capacities with Global Youth Coalition on HIV and AIDS (GYCA) , United Nations Volunteer, and  Diverse Youth Movement.

Warm regards,

Rituu
