Discussion Group: For Indicators to measure changes in Attitude and Community Ownership due to CLCP

Dear Friends in CLCP,

I am a Voting member of the Constellation and currently using CLCP in WHO and Vital Strategies Hypertension and Diabetes program, Wayanad district, Kerala, India.

Thanks to Aditya who has already developed some of the vital indicators in Non Communicable Diseases(NCD) . Consequently, in Wayanad we will be using these NCD indicators among Patient Support Groups(PSG) which were used previously in the communities of Shimla and Udaipur for HealthRise Program. Accordingly, I am attaching the NCD PSG SALT indicators with this message.

In addition, Rituu, Aditya and some of us have felt the need of proposing indicators for measuring the community ownership and individual attitudinal changes occurring while following the competence approach. I have talked to Aditya, and Rituu about the indicators for attitude and community ownership. Moreover, during the recently concluded Voting Members Meeting of The Constellation, we felt the need to work on this area of quantitative and objective measurement of our approach to better convince the skeptics.

Accordingly, this request is just an introductory one to connect all of us interested in developing these and similar indicators. So, if you know someone else who ought to be in this list please do add them in. Rituu and or me will arrange periodic zoom meetings so that we can discuss before we test these tools and see to whom we can narrow-cast these.

Meanwhile, looking forward and thanking you in advance for your future inputs on developing and whetting these and co-creating similar tools.

Rafique

Hi Rafique,

Really interesting, I'm interested about this issue. I want to be able assess the impact on communities developmement and ownership of SALT approach.

Some indicators that come in mind for me are:

- The sense of belonging - Indeed we see that to stimulate a sustainable engagement and responses to issues as they arise within a collective or a community, the sense of belonging is an important indicator;

- The sense of ownership and leadership at individual and collective level seems also to be an important elements to insure sustainability of local ressponses;

I share here, an impact assessement developped by a like-minded organisation. We certainly can make comment for improvement, but as I'm train to see abundance, I find here an example of what we could start to do to show the impact of SALT.

It can be as simple as that!

Hi Rafique (& Rituu and all others...)

I will be more than happy to work with you on these indicators. Count on me.

I will have a look to your first drat (as well as the paper from Laurie if I succeed to read it...) and revert as I have something to say.

Thank you for setting up that group.

Luc, I'll get an e-document from the organisation it'self and I'll send it here. I just scanned the document I received during the event.

By the way, I found that really nice to have a short impact assessement to read at after the workshop. It's a great idea to develop a short document that will be easy to share.

Hi Rafique,

I  am very interested in working on measuring changes in attitude and community ownership, I did some work on this when I used  SALT to mobilize Youth for Leadership. One key thing is to have indicators of personal sustainability, what is each individual doing or have in place to continue influencing the changes and this also shows effective ownership of issues and concerns of the community. Then look at indicators that will monitor communities actions to do the same.

Excellent point Korey. Very happy to see you back with us!

Happy to know of the ground already covered by you. Accordingly, will be most happy to learn from you.

I had not thought so far of indicators for personal sustainability, which of course is the individual unit measurement of community ownership. Therefore an indicator for personal sustainability will be a good one which in theory should mirror albeit at the individual level those for community ownership at the collective level. So, it will be interesting to see the relationship between both the individual and collective indicators.

Accordingly, do accept my thanks for this valuable tip.

Indeed, I am indebted,

Rafique

This is interesting. I would love to join to listen to the discussion!

Count me in!

@Rafique, how do you wish to proceed?

I would love to be part of the discussion on measurement of change, whether it be in attitude, knowledge of practice.

I have been working on measurement of change following use of SALT interventions. I have identified, so far, two domains of change :

1. Changes in social determinants of health (SDH)

2. Changes in health related quality of life .(HRQoL)

I believe these two sets need to be linked with health outcome indicators. For example, if in a population where SALT has been introduced, have health outcomes of child health (example, reduction in diarrhea and diarrheal deaths)  related with SDH and HRQOoL indicators. I hope to get a document ready by the end of the month which I would definitely share with this group.

I am also exploring two other matters:

1. How is the community to monitor change in their conditions of life and health outcomes ?

2. How do we identify village/community SALT facilitators from the community where SALT is introduced. I have been using the phrase 'SALT Nibblers' for this cadre I wait for. More discussion is needed on this matter.
