SUMMARY:Ethical issues in community development
DESCRIPTION:An online event organised by the Community Development Jou
rnalwith the Centre for Social Justice and Community Action, Durham Un
 iversity Tuesday 14th February, 2023, 10 am UK time\r\nThe Community D
evelopment Journal and Centre for Social Justice and Community Action
are pleased to announce an online event to be held on Zoom to launch a
special issue of the journal on ‘ethical issues in community develo
pment’.\r\n\r\nThe event will be introduced by special issue co-edit
ors, Sarah Banks (Durham University, UK), Pradeep Narayanan (Praxis, I
ndia) and Lynda Shevellar (University of Queensland, Australia). Many
of the contributors of the 11 articles will be present, highlighting s
ome of the ethical challenges in community development around the worl
d - from respecting local norms while tackling conflict in the Lake Ch
ad region, to analysing neighbourhood opposition to people with disabi
lities in Lithuania, and developing community-based ethical contracts
in the UK.\r\n\r\nEthics is about matters of rights, responsibilities,
harms and benefits. It draws attention to the intersection between hu
man agency and the structural forces that shape the context for commun
ity development. It also foregrounds the cognitive and emotional work
involved in identifying the ethical issues embedded in the politics an
d practice of community development, in deciding what is right and in
being a just, compassionate and trustworthy practitioner. The aim of t
he special issue is to examine community development work specifically
through an ethical lens.\r\n\r\nThe event will start with a brief out
line of the importance of focusing on ethics in community development,
offering perspectives from the special issue co-editors and contribut
ors.\r\n\r\nWe will then break-up into facilitated small groups to dis
cuss several provocations linked to the themes of the special issue. T
he aim of the groups is to give the chance for participants to share a
nd debate ideas and views on these topics:\r\n\r\n1. Community develop
ment is fundamentally unethical as it colonises local values and pract
ices.\r\n2. Ethics should not be taught as a separate subject in commu
nity development education, as it is embedded in all subjects and shou
ld pervade the curriculum.\r\n3. It is imperative that community devel
opment workers always challenge injustice and oppression in daily prac
tice, regardless of how difficult this may be.\r\n4. In community-base
d participatory research between community members and academics/profe
ssional researchers, the power always lies with the latter.\r\nPlease
register here via Eventbrite. After registration you will be sent a Zo
 om link.\r\n\r\nRegister here\r\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ethica
