Yes.....Roles have started changing, Community now organizing the health camps.

Dream of the village Dhanout in Himachal Pradesh is to stay healthy. One of the action decided by Patient Support Group (PSG) during action plan meeting was to organize screening camps for Diabetes and Hypertension regularly at Panchayat or village level.

Anil Sharma followed up the members of the group and came to know that the group is planning to organize screening camp at village level. The group decided the date, venue of the camp and called Anil to attend it.

PSG organized its first camp on 23rd July, 2018 and 30 persons were screened for Diabetes and Hypertension.

Health workers decided that they will continue organizing such camps every month and will cover all the villages.

The roles have started changing now as instead of HealthRise project organizing the camps with the help of Health staff, PSG has started taking ownership and organizing the camps..

Thank you Manisha!

Dear readers, please skip this message to read the enlightening discussion below my comment.

Very true Phil.

Will definitely update you whatever happens next in the community.

Manisha,

This is a very nice example of the community taking action. What I like about it is that the action leads to more actions. If we have taken action to find out about our personal situation with regard to hypertension or diabetes, then the results challenge us to take another action. If the result is good, how do we continue with that situation? If the result is less good, what do we need to do to improve the situation? In both cases the result leads to a conversation that leads to action.

Would be very interested to hear how the action spreads.

Rituu they have realized that instead of waiting for others to come and give them solutions for their problems they have to take the ownership e.g one of the patient said that some of them were suffering from Diabetes and Hypertension but were not aware of the fact. Through the project the got themselves screened and were diagnosed. This will not happen again and again, so they have to take the charge of their issues. Through SALT visits they realized their strengths and which gave them confidence that they can tackle their problems.

Why do you think the Patient support Groups are taking ownership, Manisha?

Comment by Manisha Bhatia on July 24, 2018 at 11:39am

Very true Marlou. Letting go is not easy for professionals. As HealthRise is going to end after two months, PSG started taking the ownership, now they are prepared for our exit. Even after this project gets over they will keep on working for non communicable diseases. HealthRise staff is very happy to see the sustainability of its work.

Congratulations for the good work, Manisha. And thank you for sharing! 'Letting go' is often not easy for professionals. What makes that Healthrise staff feel comfortable to put responsibality for organising to the patient groups?
