I work for World Vision and during this trip my focus is providing technical support to one of the Youth Economic Empowerment project that is a trialling a new model that I designed together with them. The premise is to focus on building vocational skills (building, brick making, capentry, domestic science, farming techniques and after graduation the youth may choose to find formal employment or join a youth association which we are supporting to build and strengthen various business units. The business units include investment in profit making small business, micro credit established from business profits, savings groups, business facilitation to assist young people who want to start their own businesses, mentoring and coaching. The project is at an exciting stage, having invested in an internet cafe business. The visit is to work with the youth on how to launch the next step of savings groups and establishing the micro credit units. Broadly I will also be visiting some of our community projects around HIV, Education, Maternal and Child Health, Food Security and Water and Sanitation to provide technical support around issues of sustainability. I am happy to share the Business facilitation and Enterprise Development model summary that we are trialling for feed back from members and also broadly to share ideas with others who may be interested in trying it out
Just a minor correction - we worked with teachers, not children, at the school in China. Who knows if we can make it to the Global Learning Event. I never thought we would go to Nepal (2009), Belgium and now Qindao but we did. So there is still time before the event in November for another miracle.
Many thanks Rituu. What is your twitter name? I will upload a picture. I was thinking of starting a ning blog and simply cutting and pasting my blogs I publish on wordpress.com into it. I am also going to get USPG (new name Us) to join the constellation asap.
