Youth Talk Through Arts in the Caribbean

Youth Talk Through Arts is a showcase done in coordination and partnership with Government agencies, youth networks, private sector and development partners. This program was initiated by Shari Pollard, an Entertainment Specialist, youth leader and prominent dancer in Barbados. UNDP in the Caribbean region provided full support to the initiative to ensure its success.

Youth Talk Through Arts serves to celebrate youth talent and support young artists and entrepreneurs to showcase their skills, while expressing themselves on issues affecting them in a non-judgmental arena. These areas of artistic expression include, but are not limited to: dance, music, spoken word, drama, visual Arts, fashion design and films.

Main Objectives

  1. To empower youth to participate in governance processes raising their voices through arts
  2. To inform policy highlighting areas affecting youth through the performing arts

Together with a youthful team, I coordinated the St. Lucia leg of Youth Talk Through Arts. It was first a challenge getting everything together to execute this major project. It provided the opportunity to network with youth organizations from around the island and brought them together to a centralized location to "give them a voice".

Many issues were touched on such as drug abuse and teenage pregnancy for example. Young entrepreneurs were also given the opportunity to exhibit their products/services.

Prior to the showcase, many community consultations were undertaken. During that process, Youth were trained in the arts.

In Canaries, Youth of the community used painting to express themselves. They used their skills and drew on a wall near a playing field. During that session, Youth of the community as well as neighboring communities shared their local experiences on violence within their communities and took a stand against it.

All in all, it was an excellent experience!

Youth Talk Through Arts is a project spearheaded by the members of the Youth Think Tank for the Caribbean.

Great, I remember this was the biggest element in your action plan to work towards the dream of the YYT. Great that we can virtually celebrate that achievement in your countries!
