Malaria Control, Community Systems Strengthening and Community-owned response - Geneva Meeting: 23-25 March 2009

Malaria-control_CSS_community-owned-response_GF9_guidelines_0904 _2...Fortunately, I was part of the above Malaria Community-owned response consultative meeting in Geneva. The purpose of the meeting was to provide guidelines on Community Systems Strengthening and malaria control best practices for all involved the development, evaluation and eventual implementation of Round 9 Global Fund malaria proposals (see attached document). Therefore, I want to share with you the positive strides and impact of the community response work you have been engaged in over the years. As a result, community ownership in the response to malaria has continued to attract the attention of the global-stage response. To appreciate all of your contributions and effort, and the fact that such a consultative meeting was held on the above subject is a recognition of the importance of local community response and this in itself is good news.

Despite the good news, we have a challenge with limited evidence-based studies/research on malaria community-based response. Though not enough, the Constellation being part of the meeting provided research reports from the Gambia and Togo. My request is that we inlcude operations research/studies componet on our proposals.

Dear Joseph,

Thanks a lot for sharing this document -guideline with all facilitators! I'm sure it will be useful to many of us to write proposals for Round 9.

Roll Back Malaria has done an external evaluation of malaria competence process in 3 countries (Sierra Leone, the Gambia and Kenya).
The report states: "The available evidence from both performing and nonperforming countries indicates that the MCC process is a reliable and effective way of engaging community attention and involvement in initiatives that tackle malaria."

Best regards,

Laurence
