Today Community Action Day,

Nature brought us, the children of the Rue De L’Auberge, a real challenge. Heavy snow, school’s closed, parents have difficulties to get to work, etc. So we had a theme for our day: pay extra attention to our neighborhood, a little street with 6 houses, from which 3 are
newly built.

Father Peter cleared the road; Pablo, Chiara and Gaël had fun playing with the snow; Noémi and Adriaan built ‘La Dame de L’Auberge’ (see picture); Juliana and Loïs baked brownies; neighbors came out to encourage us. Meanwhile, we discussed about why, as a community, we are strong: everyone brings his contribution; our street is international, with lots of different countries, cultures and languages (see movie); we have a lot of love to share; we like to have fun together…

So at the beginning of 2011, we decided to have a drink with all the neighbors and to put in a corner a white board on which everyone could write their ideas for the future, about what we can do to improve ‘la Rue de L’Auberge’.

Then the adults will participate as well, we hope :)

Aujourd’hui ‘Community Action Day’,

Wow, Lois, what a lovely blog you wrote and what a nice Community Action Day you had! I'm especially glad that you and other children in the neighborhood took the initiative and had fun doing it, and hope the adults will also participate. Your blog reminds me of my own neighborhood in Chiangmai years ago. We were very close, with 4 families next to each other and 8 kids among us. Each evening the kids would come out to play together on the street, and we parents would be out talking with each other while watching our kids. Two families already moved away a few years ago, and all those kids have grown up and gone their way, so no more gathering, talking, laughing, having fun, or being a community on the street. One thing I've learned from this is that children do play a very important role in the community life and in keeping the community together, although sometimes children as well as parents are not always aware of it. You, your friends, and your parents certainly are wiser, so congratulations! Please continue to write and share with us how your community is evolving, because now that we have heard about it we kind of have adopted it as our virtual community too :-)

BTW, I see in the 'Birthdays' section that it is your birthday today, so I wish you a very happy birthday and a great year ahead!

Thank you! My mother talked to me about it at first, and when we were playing outside, we thought about it once again and we decided to make some pictures and movies, and to think about what we could change, while having fun... :)
