Now, we listen carefully!

During SALT training from 28th to 30th August 2016 we had a discussion on ‘listening’ in our organization in Jan Jagriti Kendra, Chhattisgarh.  47 including 19 women and 28 men all from age group of 22 to 57 years participated in the session.

I am sharing important points from the discussion through following questions:

  • What was the situation?
  • What was the action? What brought about a change?
  • What was the change? What did we learn from it?
  • How can we use it next time?

For this we will have to go a bit further back when we had started working. We used to go to the village, people did not want to give us time, some would just turn away. We would conduct surveys, and provide them information on government schemes. We used to ask their problems. Through this they understood that we had come to solve the problems of their village, provide them jobs etc. As a result they had become dependent on us.  They wanted us to get their work done. The community members did not want to come forward, they were scared of taking the lead.

After the SALT training, we started to listen to the community. We asked them what they were proud of. Through this we realized that we take so many actions, which we should be proud of, but we do not realize that. We felt proud of them and they too felt proud of themselves.  They realized their own strengths.

For example, during SALT training when we went to Village Barbetha, Mahasamundh District for a home visit. A woman called Rinki invited us to her home. When we asked what she was proud of, initially she hesitated.  Through further conversation, she shared how with bricklin owner she had fought for rights of the bonded labourer and got them all back together from the bricklin. We saw so many strengths in her and her family- leadership, fight for rights of others, mutual cooperation and love for each other.

Similarly, as we are organizing people in the villages, we have focused on helping them identify their strengths and encourage them to use their own capacity to address their issues. Our role is to provide them information on government processes. Community members have started to approach the government officials like district collectors on their own to resolve their issues and some have been able to find the solution. The community members have started to raise their own voice for their rights. The community had these strengths but what was required was stimulate them to take action, which we have been doing through the SALT process.

In the future we will listen to the community even more carefully. We will encourage those  who have been influenced by SALT process to encourage others to find own solutions based on their strengths.

Story

District Billuada bazar, block Bilaigarh, village Jogidipa Budeshwar Sahu when started work he said that people saw him as a stranger.   I tried several ways to talk to them but they would not listen to me.

Then following the SALT process, I told them I am here from JJK, to listen  and learn from them. Finally, Sukhram, Hiralal, Firteen Bai, Pili Bai from the village started talking to me.  I asked them to share one thing they had done that they were proud of in their life. They started sharing and we developed a good relationship. We started discussing the importance of organizing themselves. I asked them what was their dream for the village. They shared the issues of their village- safe drinking water, good road, education of their children, liquor shop etc. They called for a meeting of the village and decided that they will take action on the handpump, which is not working in the village, and they have to walk 3 kms to fetch water. They collected Rs 5 each to hire a tractor to go to the Public Health Engineering Department (PHEI). They went to the PHEI office and registered a complaint and put up an application for new handpump to MDO. Subsequently, the MDO sent a technician to repair the handpump and also approved a new handpump for the village. Now Village Jogipara does not have any problem related to water.

We can take the villagers of Jogipara to stimulate other villagers who are not responding to their issues. We will continue to do this through SALT process.
