One such tool is called the “mandala of our truths”, and it is part of something called “deep ecology”, and specifically Joanna Macy’s the “work that reconnects”.

This is how this particular session was opened: “Who has ever experienced working in a community where at some point, you could sense a tension, something that could, if not attended to, generate a conflict?”

Sitting in a circle we all raise our hand.

“We decided to propose this tool, as it can be an interesting for you to explore such situations of tension”.

In the circle symbolically represented by a few scarves knotted together, we find four symbolic spaces represented by the following elements: leaves, a stone, a piece of wood and an empty bowl. What do these elements represent in the Mandala?

The stone stands for fear;

The piece of wood stands for anger;

The leaves stand for sadness;

The bowl stands for lack/emptiness.

The mandala of our truths is a receptacle of all the tensions and pains we may be experiencing. It is an invitation to feel them fully, share/express them in the group, and finally let go of them by finding the hidden “antidote” of each, the unfulfilled need which once expressed can be acted upon.

Each element represented in the circle is there to help the participant to feel/express the pain he/she is experiencing.

Each participant holds the space and can at any moment come into the circle.

Having chosen to step into the circle means the person wishes to feel and express something, and yet there is no obligation to voice this feeling through talking, as the person may very well decide to just sit in silence, feeling whatever emotion pops up for them, and offering that to the group.

Each person, when they feel called, enters the space, picks up one of the elements and either expresses why they have picked it up, or stays silent in their experience. Once that person has finished, everybody connects to the person and the circle (by physically reaching down to touch the knotted scarves or whatever else is used to symbolically represent the circle) and says “We have heard you”.

Once participants have experienced/expressed what they needed to (one participant may feel the need to go into the circle several times, so this may actually take up to an hour), the facilitator thanks the group. Then, he/she goes over each element again, and sparks a conversation on the “antidotes” of each, the “hidden facet” of each strong emotion, which reveals an unfulfilled need that we can act on.

Here is what came out of this specific situation: if I feel fear then I am also capable of courage, if I feel emptiness I long for abundance and fulfillment, if I feel sadness it is because I am capable of love, my anger springs from passion for justice. Recognizing the painful truths that we carry inside our hearts and honoring them can help us reconnect with these antidotes, fuel our action in the world. It is therefore useful, at the end of such a session, to discuss how these needs, once identified, can turn into practices and actions that will help individuals and the group grow through the tension and into a more harmonious feeling.

Chiang Dao: GST and transition team meeting, February 2018

A few months down the line, another opportunity arose within the Constellation to put this tool to use. We were meeting in Chiang Dao (the City of Stars) Thailand, to discuss shared governance. Prior to the meeting, several events had happened which had set off a lot of emotions for many of us, bringing us to want to reconnect to SALT as our way of working in a way that enabled us to recognize and name the tensions and emotions, and find ways to move through them together.

This is why the very first day of our meeting began with a “mandala of our truths” facilitated by Laurie and myself, whereby each person was invited to share their emotions: fear, anger, lack (or emptiness), sadness or any other emotion that was present (a pillow was used to represent this “other” emotion).

This initial sharing circle led to a lot of emotions, and to a feeling of togetherness in acknowledging/receiving/welcoming these emotions (“we have heard you”) as part of what SALT in “shared governance” is all about.

From there, we were able to acknowledge and honor some of the more “surprising” words in the SALT “alphabet soup”:

Accepting and welcoming everything that is there in order to Appreciate the possibilities opened up by this Authenticity. Through this process we Learned that Tensions were a gift to the group if they were welcomed and dealt with in a Safe space, that creating and nurturing this safe space was essential, and that being a Team required deep Listening to our own internal voice and to the “warning signs” of others (including their silence), and that what made all of that possible was operating from a place of Love (in its 4 qualities!) and genuine care for the wellbeing of ourselves, others and the Constellation.

Our thoughts as we concluded this meeting were that if we are thorough in practicing these “surprising” letters SALT, we may indeed find that we are Transforming :) . All of this is exactly what “creating a culture of appreciation that goes beyond what is going well” (a practice of the GST’s 2018 action plan) is about.

We are in 2017, on a beautiful October day in Bugonga, Entebbe, Uganda.

Betty, the chairperson of the community, starts telling us the history of the community and how they came together.

She speaks one name: Catherine Nyirinkindi.
Suddenly, the ten to twelve members sitting in the circle under the tree light up, their faces bright with warm memories of a woman whose indiscriminating love transformed their lives.

And Betty tells the story. Around 2007, Catherine lived in Kiwafu Entebbe, and she was touched by the challenges that fellow older persons, widows and orphans, were experiencing around her, and about how lonely many of them felt. Having gone through similar struggling herself, being a widow and raising her 6 children and grandchildren herself, her heart went out to them, her love was genuine.

She would always tell others: what does God tell you to do? If you have more than one, give the other! Her grandchildren still remember: she always told us to share whatever we have because others are not so fortunate.

So, she started to visit her neighbours in their homes, particularly those who were sick or struggling, and they shared about their difficulties but also their hopes. She brought with her small things to help them with basic necessities, such as sugar and soap, she even cooked for people.

She visited everyone: be they Protestant like her, or Catholic, Muslim, Born-again, well-off or poor. Her love knew no discrimination. She used to say: “God does not discriminate, so why should we?”

She was a lay reader and very active in her church. She started involving other parishioners to do visits also, among them Rose, who became her best friend. Rose tells us: “I think she saw something special in me.”

After having made these visits a regular practice, she felt that it would be even better for them to meet altogether so that they could support and inspire one another. So she started to organize weekly gatherings for tea and a chat.

When she would visit someone in need, she would mention the monthly gatherings and invite the person to join, again indiscriminately of faith or social class.

This last point is important because, as Liz told us later, in Bugonga tensions were very strong between people of different social classes. But what Catherine began, and which soon turned into a community enterprise of older persons doing things for and by themselves, slowly but surely began to chip away at people’s prejudice.

Catherine truly was a uniting factor.

When the growing community came together, they who had always had the feeling that they were considered useless by society began to feel appreciated and important.

Pretty soon, it wasn’t just Catherine anymore, it was all of them who started doing home visits to one another, especially when someone was feeling sick, or particularly lonely.

And the group met regularly, and became more robust. As Lilian, another community member, shares, “of course we used to meet our neighbours and talk to them before, but somehow this was different. Gossip turned into empowerment as we shared about what we were doing to better our situation; and got inspired by what others were doing.”

With a small boda-boda enterprise, Catherine started to support her fellow members’ business ventures in selling vegetables, weaving and crafts, piggery, raising poultry etc. Today the members continue to meet, and their desire to do things for and by themselves has been further fuelled by the arrival of HENU who helped them clarify their vision and the actions that would lead to fulfilling this dream.

In the two days we spent with the Bugonga community, we had an opening prayer told by a Protestant, were welcomed into the home of a born-again Christian, paid our respects to a mourning Muslim family where a prayer was shared in Arabic, visited homes of women who had extra houses they rented, and others who did not have enough chairs for us visitors to sit on. And yet Catherine herself passed away a couple of years back.

You see, Catherine Nyirinkindi, you are not dead: your love lives on, and its legacy shines so bright it has empowered a whole community to action and solidarity.

Here is the lesson I drew from Catherine's story: When we give unconditional love and solidarity, we naturally inspire others to spread this love and care.

Which would be your lesson from the same story? Please share as a comment below :) !

We sat in a clown school in Grez-Doiceau, a space to host People making Art, and Play.

“We” were a group of 10 people gathered around a common intention: reconnecting to our dream for Europe.

Volatile politics and shifting alliances, sometimes the very ground on which we stand as Europeans seems to be unraveling beneath our feet, and yet many of us still harbor in our hearts a dream for a larger “we”, a “we” that makes us richly diverse and somehow united.

It is around that “we” that we gathered that morning, in a circle. In the middle: a few lone stars, a candle and some flowers, to honor our desire to seed something together.

And the magic happened. Not only the smooth-inspiring-ride magic, but also the get-out-of-your-comfort-zone-and-try magic.

We did dream-building in different ways that day. For the individual dream, Nathalie introduced a beautiful poetry exercise which is brought to us from Indonesia: the pantoum. It is a series of questions which we answer with very little allocated time, and somehow a poem unfolds that is deeply connected to our intuition and freed of self-censorship: deeply liberating!

The individual visions that spring from the exercise are wildly inspiring, and the energy in the room soars to unforeseen heights. Here is a mix of 4 of our poems (Xenia, Erik, Anu and myself) which should give you an idea of our visions:

The floating rivers that are carrying the water

A peaceful sound of water colliding rocks

Freshness of air

Birds, people talking in different languages, laughter.

Hope.

Gratitude Peace Happiness

Laughter Joy Happy sharing Harmony

I take in this beautiful tapestry, it is Art. We are ART.

Who are you when you are really you?

Doing great Will be authentic

I wish for love, unfolding in a myriad of colors, textures.

A sense of belonging with exciting joy

A feast of interdependency

Release the anger from inside

I am creating space to sit and breathe

The freedom to build the container

What color does love look like today?

Turquoise, speckled with gold.

Yes we will, we could, we can

I am a splendid human becoming

Never before had I, as a facilitator of SALT/CLCP, witnessed such a powerful demonstration of individual dreams.

The other “magic” came afterwards: the not-so-comfortable magic :) .

There we were feeling elated by our individual visions, and by the clear overlap between all our visions… and now, we tried to create a common vision from our individual ones using magazines we could rip apart, colored markers, glue, and scissors.

And somehow the process felt tedious, and the collective effort we came to didn’t even come close to providing the same inspiration that had sprung from our individual poems!

Yet still we struggled on, making sense of the images, simplifying to come to more clarity, until we arrived to a dream we felt mostly happy with in essence (not in form!):

And a set of practices:

We sit together on the grass and drink wine

We reconcile town and nature

We breathe fresh air

We recognize that there is plenty to be grateful for

We appreciate and celebrate reality/what is there

We celebrate our uniqueness and oneness

We are in contact with our feelings and aware of our emotions

We learn/practice/teach compassion

We create space for sharing/learning/healing

We listen

We contribute towards regenerating our ecosystems

A healthy Europe soup, with lots of ingredients and a clear container!

The day ends with a sharing circle, and the echoes are about the importance of opening such spaces for deep connection and sharing from the heart- “circles of trust” as Franck called them!

And we coin a new phrase, “Let’s Europe!” – yes, because perhaps our dream for Europe is not so much a destination as a process. A process of “magic”, both the inspiring and the challenging type.

A process of reconnecting to our deep aspirations, to each other, and to the future that wants to emerge for all of us.

A feast of interdependency :)

And in the process, we are splendid human becomings.

Participants came from all walks of life and from different parts of the world (not unlike other SALT initiation sessions). They were welcomed with food, smiles and inspirational words (quotes were posted on the walls, and participants were invited to gather around the ones that spoke to them most and strike up a conversation. As usual, we started out by getting to know each other on a different level. The stories around the personal items that people brought or the images they chose revealed their beautiful, vulnerable self. The stage was set for working with each other in an authentic, open and honest way.

However, we felt that the participants after the introductory exercise were well on their way to understanding that essence. Instead, we invited everyone to plaster themselves with labels, labels they have received or adopted themselves over the years. However, it quickly became apparent that we simply had to go with the flow. Participants became so engaged in their tasks, be it storytelling, dream building or having lunch together :) that we found it counter-intuitive to strap them into a time schedule. And that is what was needed. It gave each of us the space to explore, go deeper, truly understand what it means to be human and to be human together.

And that is what made it rich, so rich that at by Sunday evening, no one had the urge to go home. Even though we were physically tired, everyone was buzzing with a different energy, the energy of knowing that if we dream together, we can achieve something together and create a better world. One of the participant’s closing words was: “The world would be such a beautiful place if everyone had the chance to go through such an experience!”

The question is bounced back into the group, and here are some of the responses: "it’s about bringing the human in the room" ... "here, the content is the community" ... "the heart is present, which creates expansion" ... "our humanity is addressed and honored" … "the facilitator is transformed: we strip off labels, the facilitator shifts from being solely an expert to showing up as a human being", or "SALT gives us permission to allow the shared expression of humanity"

Conclusions

The Constellation strives to learn and adapt based on experience, and we wanted a website that would allow for continuous and collective re-crafting and evolution. This new website allows us to do just that! Many, many people have helped shape it with their time, experience and talent, and our hearts are filled with gratitude and wonder. The website will keep breathing and evolving, as all of you contribute to help us bring it even closer to a genuine representation of who we are and what we stand for.

Devinez? …

I write you today filled with gratitude and bewilderment as I look back and take…

Dear Constellation friends,

I write you today filled with gratitude and bewilderment as I look back and take stock of the past few months, and of the many wonderful twists and turns my life has taken…

You see, today I am creating my dream job, and I owe much of the opportunities that have led to this possibility to the Constellation, its spirit and its members, dear friends and priceless life teachers.

One main and unexpected twist has been my encounter with another wonderful organization called “Talent for Humanity”, encounter which, believe it or not, was indirectly facilitated by our favorite Share Facilitator here at the Constellation, Rituu B. Nanda, and her acolyte in miracles Florence Hutchison, also a member of this platform.

Rituu, her eye as always on the lookout for mutually beneficial connections, suggested Florence should connect with me on our Ning platform. And so Florence did, and as she read through my profile she got excited and started making connections, too! A few Linked-In connections, Skype phone calls, face-to-face meetings, and today I am working with Thierry Sanchez, as Project Developer and spokesperson for Talent for Humanity, using strengths that the Constellation helped uncover (creative facilitation, writing, public speaking, social skills) to represent TFH and create a wonderful project for Brussels, Europe and the world! Some Constellation friends here in Belgium are also contributing their unique talents and abilities to assist the birth and development of this project.

So you see, there is much and more to celebrate today, and so much to be grateful for :) !

I feel such resonance between the work, vision and spirit of these two organizations that I think you should meet!

The founders of Talent for Humanity have recently crystallized years of hard work and life-changing encounters into one beautifully-written book, which could be one way for all of you to “meet” Talent for Humanity, the stories we tell and the people we support and celebrate. It tells the stories of Reza, Sherry and Bob Jason, Aliza Hava, Deeyah Khan, Yarrow Kraner, and Daniele Finzi Pasca—men and women who have used their passion and creativity in the arts to reach out and infuse others with values and understanding that are vital for their community, and for our common future.

I won’t spoil the book by spilling the beans here :) , but one thing I do want to say is that it stands incomplete without your own contribution. A few pages at the end are left blank so that you, reader, can write your own “letter to humanity”. The “letter to humanity” is very close to the Constellation’s dream exercise. The main question is: How would you put into words your wishes for the world and your aspirations to do something to bring change? And don’t forget some words on what you plan to do (or what you are already doing)!

You can now order Talent for Humanity: Stories of Creativity, Compassion and Courage to Inspire You on Your Journey. (ISBN-13: 978-1626341814)

Oh and one last thing… The first story I read from the book is Yarrow Kraner’s chapter, which is called “Connecting the dots”. Well there’s a point in the chapter where he speaks of an epiphany he had. He was lying in bed when all of a sudden he had a vision. He saw a star light up in a dark sky, alone, shining dimly. Then another star appeared, and another, another, and yet more stars. Soon, light, almost invisible connecting threads started to be etched, connecting the stars amongst themselves. The more connections were made, the brighter all the stars shone, until all the stars we connected and the whole thing blew up!

Light-bulb! Yarrow had found his calling, and he would spend a fair amount of time over the next few years finding and connecting people with powerful visions to people who could help them manifest this idea into reality, thus effectively contributing to HATCHing innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues!

Does this image sound familiar :) ?

With deep respect, love and gratitude to all of you, I wish you and all your loved ones a bright day, and/or night under inspiring starry skies…

Mystery = « my story ».

Hello friends :) !

Starting on the 6th of April, a few of us gathered in Barcelona to dream about the “share” function within the Constellation and the ways in which our dream for 2050 could be brought about, little by little, through our concerted actions.
Hello friends :) !

Starting on the 6th of April, a few of us gathered in Barcelona to dream about the “share” function within the Constellation and the ways in which our dream for 2050 could be brought about, little by little, through our concerted actions. Many of you were also present in thought, some through Skype, and a good many through the wonderful individual dreams for share that you sent in. Thank you everyone for contributing to making this get-together meaningful and “creactive”.

Because it certainly was both creative and active! Creative because dreaming requires the imagination and we explored some new forms in which to stimulate it in order to “see” meaning and foresee change in concrete form. Active in what sense? Well we eventually came up with a plan of action for the next six months, to which people volunteered to contribute in the area that they felt most drawn to.

This was an incredible learning opportunity and experience for me as I am a newcomer in the realm of community life competence, and so I was bedazzled by the power of the individual and common dreams in encouraging a group on their way to positive change through concerted action!

If I had to summarize this learning experience I would probably say two things. One is that constructive thought can come from the most unexpected places, and that soliciting our right-brain impulsions to be passionate, creative, moving, artistic and intuitive can prepare the field for the analytical and practical work that will come later. Another is that fun and laughter are great ways to create a sense of community :) !

An incredible moment of the weekend for me was seeing Jan and then Ricardo creating body sculptures of what the Constellation was to them. Jan’s proposal was a star-like shape looking inwards but radiating out with lots of fingers and feet connecting to hold the structure together. This then led on to a prolific discussion on the nature of this “connecting” which was the job of the GST and the share team until finally Ricardo got up and proposed an alternative image which included spinning and touching. Why? To represent the fact that the inspiration for any work done by the Constellation comes from the communities themselves, particularly those communities that have gathered up momentum and are “spinning” by themselves, thus inspiring others to join in the motion towards positive change and life competence!

A picture says a thousand words, and none of what I write here can quite capture what happened as well as Jan’s pictures did (Thanks a ton Jan!):

Thank you Khadim, Rituu, Lois, MariJo, Marie, Jessica, Ita, Marlou, Jean-Louis, Jan, Ricardo, Michelle, Stella and co-cook(er), Onesmus, Eric and everyone else who participated in making these wonderful few days together what they were! And may the spinning momentum we all took with us from this meeting be re-injected into the wider Constellation community and beyond through Share and Learn for and from Action :) !
