That day, after a satisfactory and motivating three-hour session of work in the shade house and selling some greens to community members, 6 young women and 3 young men sat and engaged in an informal socializing conversation. The environment was conducive, they sat in an area they had previously cleared among the trees. “Why don’t we cook?” someone suggested. It was agreed!

Tasks were shared, starting the fire from dry shrubs available, to getting the ingredients—some bought (minimal), some from different homes, and some from the shade house as the callaloo (poi)—and cooking. Everyone participated in different roles of this impromptu bush-cook. (^_^)

Prior to this shade house experience, none of those involved had knowledge of shade houses and none had much interest in farming and agriculture. Their involvement, actually, was part of the Village Council initiative to stimulate interest in different entrepreneurial livelihood opportunities and external funding by the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives, supported the stimulation as a means of building resilience. The shade-house is one livelihood opportunity. The shade house [96’ x 38’] was built to demonstrate to the youths and farmers its mitigation effect on climate change and to build resilience as an initiative of the Mainstay Whyaka Village Council.

Today, this informal socializing moment offered an opportunity for the youths to talk about the intense high daily temperatures and the impact on their lives and livelihood. The conversation included how growing vegetables and greens in such a controlled environment is practical and rewarding. This moment, among the laughter that ensued, was an indication of the internalization of the shade-house as a beneficial livelihood opportunity.

 The bush-cookers sharing a meal together.

The Mainstay Whyaka Village Council hopes that eventually 3-5 of the 30 youths in the village looking for another opportunity in life will take full responsibility of the shade house enterprise as a business that would generate satisfactory revenue. The 30 youths are assisted by a Government of Guyana program through the Mainstay Whyaka Village Council who assigns different roles for them within the village. They are paid every month once they have completed ten days' work (3-4 hours per day).

The initial training event was facilitated with support from the National Agriculture Research and Extension Institute [NAREI] on the following subject areas:

Climate SMART agriculture

Introduction to cost of production calculation

Pest and disease importance and cost of production were the main takeaways from the three days event. Note that the pest and disease was a part of the Good Agricultural Practices, integrated pest management. In terms of the future participants felt that getting practical experience, getting more villagers, especially youths and having more time for interactive engagement would help. There were three specific intentions as revealed:

“start my own garden” “share knowledge with my mother who has a vegetable garden”

“try planting a small kitchen garden and extend with proper experience”.

The specific result of “A climate resilience vision was created by a cross-section of the village leadership whom the villagers trust and strategic objectives to realize the vision, developed.” A trusted cross section of community leaders contributing to the dream comprised village councilors, CSOs, Enhancement Workers, Pathway development Workers, Community Development Workers, housewives, former Toshaos, pastor, and teachers.

The SALT Visit experience

We were fortunate to listen to testimonies from Cameroon related to the impact of SALT/CLCP helping communities becoming a part of the solution and in support for supplies of sanitary pads for young girls.

See testimony here

In Indonesia a facilitator shared how being an effective facilitator means being immersed into the community not as an expert but as a community member.
‘Taboo on sexuality’ is emerging as an important issue in many cultures. How to address this collectively therefore needs that type of conversation.

Evidence that SALT/CLCP are part of helping communities being a part of the solution.

This is our dream “Fairly competent as SALT facilitators contributing to making better societies.” Our journey towards the dream began when we created a safe space of trust where we identified who we really are. We understand why we are proud, that we also had similar concerns and hopes.

What are we most proud of?

Esther “proud of being a woman, social worker and ability to overcome [the] past and use it like a motivating factor to young girls.” While Paul is proud of “....his ability to negotiate access into communities and engaging community members and the fact that he is from Nso.”

Some concerns:

The future (equality, freedom, education) of women and children

That others especially orphans do not suffer

Social inclusion

Single mothers break the barrier of I can’t make it again in life because I have a child and see so many deprived kids in her community.

Our hope during this SALT Program

To become saltier and really learn how to respect community views and engage them in a better way.

to acquire good leadership skills that will enable her to relate better with people in her community

Gain knowledge on better tuning a non for profit organization.

to support those in need and also appreciate what comes out of them

to gain more skills in engaging community sessions

Achieving this begins with the individual dream, moving to the group dream and then to the community dream. It does not mean, however, that life is perfect, but people can cope better with life’s challenges.

In the individual dream, participants reflect on their future in ten years, fifteen years, twenty years. What would that time be like? Describe it.

Following the development of the individual and group dreams, the similarities and differences between the group dreams were identified

 Two volunteers create a vision statement from the similarities and major difference that emanated from the three groups dreams

 The initial dream statement created by the volunteers

The Village Council of Mainstay / Whyaka, an indigenous village in Guyana, invited government supported Community Service Officers volunteers to contribute to jointly build a common dream for more structured and mutually supportive developmental processes. It was intended that this exercise would enable the Village Council to support the CSO volunteers in a more structured and mutually beneficial manner.

After engaging in the development of the practices, members agree that the dream statement could be re-defined as a motivating statement: “Peaceful retirement and healthier lifestyle through a better education and from hard work.”

Participants identified five practices that can deliver the dream:

Better health

Healthier lifestyle from the provision of better health services, good nutrition, diet, and exercises.

SMART agriculture

Appropriate technological innovation contributing to food security, self sufficiency, and livelihood.

Tourism and clean energy opportunities

Tourism and clean energy provide major livelihood opportunities. With renewable energy as the main source of energy, Mainstay / Whyaka residents enjoy a better quality of life socially and economically.

Improved education

A better education system contributing to a paradigm shift towards a skilled and professional human resource base of our community.

Improved infrastructure

The road networks including our airstrip are strong and supported in a sustainable manner by adequate hospitality services for other communities of practices.

The response was that the exercise was impacting. Putting the pieces back together invokes team effort but I also learn that when things are broken such as relationships because of whatever the reason including violence, alcoholism, or drug abuse mending back the relationship isn’t easy and it might never be the same again.

Later the same day I went to observe how the team was engaging youth of the village on leadership development and qualities of a good leader. To my surprise, one of the team members came over to me and whispered Mr Haynes, would you to do the exercise you did with us this morning, with the youth here? I answered in the affirmative.

By that time the team had already gotten the paper towel to do the Ready Pull!

Of course there was laughter tearing the paper apart and during the fitting the pieces back together. The response from the youth was not dissimilar. They say it was fun and they felt more relaxed and enthused to be engaged in the remainder of the day’s event. One youth said it helped them come out of their comfort zone, meaning that the day before and part of today we sat with people we were more comfortable with but how the facilitator mixed us into different groups, we feel more connected to others who are in the group we tore the paper with. There is more connection with all participants now!
Being climate resilienttag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2019-10-23:2028109:BlogPost:1796242019-10-23T13:45:11.000ZAutry Hayneshttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/AutryHaynes

The ‘climate crisis’ is real my friends! If you feel the micro-climate temperate is hotter than usual, that is happening all over the world. Not only in your neighborhood! Your micro-level experience is supported in a broader sense by the evidence of science.

Climate resilience is the capacity for a socio-ecological system to: [1] absorb stresses and maintain function in the face of external stresses imposed upon it by climate change and [2] adapt, reorganize, and evolve into more desirable configurations that improve the sustainability of the system, leaving it better prepared for future climate change impacts

Inherent in the conversation about climate resilience are the concepts of adaptation, vulnerability, and climate change. If the definition of resiliency is the ability to recover from a negative event, in this case climate change. Then talking about preparations beforehand and strategies for recovery (aka adaptations), as well as populations that are less capable of developing and implementing a resiliency strategy (aka vulnerable populations) are essential.

We are appreciative of the effort by advocates of the climate crisis to make us more AWARE. We, in general terms re-Act. But my friends, more than just being aware and reactionary is needed. The very advocates are taking conscious action and that is the level at which we ALL need to be. Making a conscious decision to do OUR part. The fate of future generations is under threat.

We are very fortunate that at the global level, the international and many national bodies are in the forefront in this conversation about climate change impacts and building climate resilience. There is a framework that includes climate resilience efforts to address the vulnerability that communities, states, and countries currently have with regard to the many consequences of climate change. Different resilience strategies include the social, economic, technological, and political elements.

What is needed is a more conscious Local Response geared towards building and improving climate resilience. During September 2019, there was a hype of global events that helped us to be more aware and surely there has been Re-Action. Can we now move to the next level, making conscious decisions about our efforts / actions?

We need to understand that the Climate Crisis is not a problem of tomorrow, but of TODAY, as crisis events are happening with more intensity, frequency and consequence. Therefore Local Response including early warning systems to mitigate threats such as tropical diseases which have significant consequences.

Local Response would effectively contribute to changing public opinion, and when this is more evident, this can change actions by government. Governments usually response to public opinion. Therefore Local Response needs to be more proactive.

Who should be involved in this Local Response ? All and Sundry: politicians, civil society, the business community, regulators, indigenous communities, media, families, all have a responsibility.

One of the most influential leaders of the Climate Crisis is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which was created to achieve the “stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.

When it comes to the stabilization of greenhouse gases, forests play an important role in regulating carbon across the globe. This encourages countries to “explore a range of actions, identify options and undertake efforts, including demonstration activities, to address the drivers of deforestation,” encouraging developing countries to contribute to mitigation in the forest sector by undertaking the following activities (known as REDD+):

(a) Reducing emissions from deforestation;

(b) Reducing emissions from forest degradation;

(c) Conservation of forest carbon stocks;

(d) Sustainable management of forests;

(e) Enhancement of forest carbon stocks.

At the forefront of a resilient climate crisis are the people who are integrally involved and or impacted.

Developing countries willing to participate in REDD+ should prepare four elements: a national strategy or action plan; a national forest reference emission levels and/or forest reference level; a robust and transparent national forest monitoring system; and a system for providing information on how the safeguards are being addressed and respected throughout the implementation of the REDD+ activities.

How safeguards are addressed and respected throughout the implementation of the REDD+ activities is dependent on the extent of community conversations. The conversations need not be about forests contribution to climate crisis alone.

We know that communities in general have a whole host of things to consider but attaining to respons-ability to continue along the path of a process, of an engagement until reaching the preferred conditions as set in the goal setting or dreams build, is important. Thereby, Local Response will be contributing to [1] absorbing stresses and maintain function in the face of external stresses imposed upon it by climate change and [2] adapt, reorganize, and evolve into more desirable configurations that improve the sustainability of the system, leaving it better prepared for future climate change impacts.

Local Response is the ability to respond; how to create a response? how to increase respons-ability? And keeping track of the progress and conditions.

It implies the continuation of work in terms of addressing issues by themselves; same issue and continue to work on/life go on and addressing issues as they emerge. Life is not perfect, but we build competence to cope with the challenges.

A life competent community is sustainable. Sustainability is also opportunities that arise; a system where people give and take. If you contribute by your talent, you feel energy to contribute on the long term. The community mission is also to support the individual in the expression of it’s talent.

Having a holistic view and understanding of the complexities and becoming competent so that they can cope with life’s challenges will significantly contribute to communities becoming climate crisis resilient competent.
SALT as a bottom-up approach - Study of Kasper Moestag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2019-02-14:2028109:BlogPost:1756392019-02-14T18:00:00.000ZAutry Hayneshttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/AutryHaynes

Is SALT truly a 'bottom-up approach?

Read this study of an intern [Kasper Moes] who did a study in the health sector within Holland. The assessment of how GGD employees working with communities view CLCP/SALT. The aim was to explore whether CLCP / SALT may be beneficial additions to Dutch health promotion in order to improve public health, and whether the method is suitable.

This was done using the following research question: ‘’What are the potential arguments in favor and against implementing CLCP/SALT in a Dutch community health service context according to GGD experts?’’ The participants of the study included "[..] employees working for the division of health promotion and epidemiology are experts on both public health and working with the community."

There were five arguments in favor of and three general arguments against the hypothesis. The five arguments in favor included:

[1] [...] provide a broader, more complete vision on community health ...];

[2] Increase ownership of citizens;

[3] [...] straight forward methodology to comprehend ...[....] implying that utilizing it would be an unhampered task in theory.

[4] CLCP/SALT is not restricted to formalities. The threshold for testing the methodology in a hands-on practical way would be low.

[5] CLCP / SALT can be related to the natural way of working of many. These employees [ working in public health and working with the community] already possessed a fundamental understanding of the CLCP/SALT principles, making it less complex for them to understand.

The negative arguments include:

[1] Difficulty in linking goals of the health programme with those that emerge during the engagement with communities.

[2] Difficultly to constantly keep all actors up to date, as well as justify and quantify progress made by the project. CLCP is an organic process, making it unpredictable what courses of action are to be taken and what outcomes are to be measured.

[3] CLCP / SALT can take up a lot of time, making it difficult to acquire and retain involvement aligned to the different priorities of the top-down approach of the organization implementing the interventions.

“The good old days eh! These days are so full with threats of different types. How can young people especially, aspire to achieve their dreams? I want good for my family, but i am concerned about by 15yrs old daughter. We are working hard to instill good values in her but she complains a lot about peer pressure and bullyism when not in the home. What can we do, what can I do to reduce these threats?” Thinking, thinking, thinking ……………………………..”well I have this thought. I will share with my dear wife who also, wants good for our daughter.”

Sitting together, Mr Ousman shares his thought with his wife.

Dear Suzi, I have been thinking on our conversation about our daughter and her vulnerabilities when away from home. “What is that thought, Mr. Ousman? I am curious, we talked about this so many times.”

“Yes dear, but I am also thinking of our neighbors, who have similar concerns. You know we live in a marginalized community and that makes us and our children more vulnerable. Maybe they could join in this effort!” “well okay, now share that thought, my curiosity is waning.”

“In our community there is no place where we can meet and have conversation with our children on morals and how they can lead good lives in this bewildered world.” So, I am thinking of making our home that space where we can encourage our and our neighbors children to lead good lives. We can have conversation on sex, sex and reproductive health, abuse, human trafficking, alcoholism and any challenges that they would like to have conversation on. Mr Ousman wife’s remark was “Can you and me have all these conversation with children and young people?” Mr. Ousman, “We will have to seek support for some things we need to accomplish.” His wife, “Where will we get that funding from?” Mr. Ousman, “Honey, I don’t know but when we share our thinking with our neighbors, they, might some answers of how we can achieve what we want to.”

Fifteen members of the neighborhood agreed to the thought of Mr. Ousman. A forum started. The forum, a ‘safe space’ for children and youths became a meaningful engagement in the community. Neighbors of the forum supported the effort, financially and otherwise.

Eventually, the engagement with the young formalize into weekly activity and some ground rules were developed. The rules are that during the weekly conversations, no mobile phones were allowed during that period of their conversation, no school uniforms, no making of boyfriend or girlfriend and no smoking in the house. The home or ‘safe space’ was open 24/7.

Almost three years after the forum started, a conversation between Mr and Mrs Ousman, we learn: Mr. Ousman saying to his wife “Dearie,our persistence worked,we did what we had to do, what our hearts motivated us to do. Did you noticed that the social worker for this district is of immense support to the forum? She is the new social worker from the government working in this district who learned of our activity and thought that what she was doing in this district could benefit us. She offered her support and now we have a partnership with government. Our persistence worked for us.

Mrs Ousman also reflected on the support, the forum received: “Some of the children were in need of medical check up but had reservation doing so, in fear of what others might think seeing them going to the hospital. Now, however, the hospital has arranged for them to go at anytime convenient to them. This arrangement is working out well for the children and the reports are coming to us.” Mrs Ousman also reflected that her patience is what worked for her during this period. The children really confided in her and patience dealing with them in a way that indicated her understanding them without judgement was important.

In terms of moving forward, Mr Ousman is confident that what he, his wife and neighbors have started will continue into the future. Members of the forum continue to be in support of everything that is being done. Of course there are challenges. Effort of those who are in the programme to bring new members could be difficult. Those who come, do so voluntarily. Mr. Ousman reflected that ‘trust’ for and by everyone contributed to the confidence within the forum. As he further stated that “psycho-social support by two students still at university also helps with coping abilities of students in programme.” Their voluntary support is linked also to tutors, lecturers professors within the universities the volunteers are associated with.

The parents [some single parents] of children involved in the programme are also involved and regularly benefit from some activities, including the pyscho-social counseling.
Good Governance enhanced by quality education of ALL!tag:aidscompetence.ning.com,2018-09-23:2028109:BlogPost:1716792018-09-23T13:20:42.000ZAutry Hayneshttps://aidscompetence.ning.com/profile/AutryHaynes

The indigenous community of Guyana, comprise just about 10% of the national population but occupy almost 80% of the 83,000 sq. ml. land mass. Their value to Guyana earned them a one month heritage observation where each of the more than 200 villages celebrate by showcasing their culture and other values. There is an hype of activities during the September month celebration.

For Orealla / Siparuta, engaging the whole council to explore working as a team and developing a village plan was one of the month's activities.

The Toshao [captain] a retired head teacher remembered engaging in an activity some years ago that stimulated his interest in mobilizing people to think differently and doing differently as a result, agreed to apply this concept with his team of fairly young councilors.

The conversation began with what are we most proud of? The response was:

We are a community of peaceful people.

Proud that we are up keeping our indigenous heritage.

Proud that our village has beautiful sceneries

To be a people that is hungry for better opportunities in all aspects

The conversation thereafter and the councilors "..being hungry for better opportunities" led to their common dream:

"Orealla / Siparuta a modern and model indigenous village where good governance, vigorous education programme and tourism are the engine of our livelihood and socio-economic well being.
The reflection on governance indicated that more could have been achieved and that education could contribute to this achievement and in other areas as well, such as development of a aggressive tourism product. Tourism will be the hallmark of Orealla / Siparuta as indicative in the dream.

The key to putting us on this journey is having an effective team spirit as leaders with good management capability. Laurie, who was walking in front of me, picked up a piece of paper. I began to wonder why?

At the end of the walk, we idled a bit to allow the sun to soak in as well as enjoy the view of Belgium on the other side to the river. One or two colleagues soaked their feet in the water. (^_^). In fact, at one moment, Marlou stopped and someone asked "what happened?" Her response was, "listen to the silence, it is captivating.." We laughed but agreed.Laurie with her bag of waste!!!

It became clear, Laurie’s level 5 [natural] action. She found an old bag and began to pick up waste and place them into the bag. Without a comment or question, we, joined the effort. Laurie took the bag until she found a disposable bin and there she got rid of the waste we collected.

No one, but us, witnessed this remarkable effort. To the world, this remarkable feat would go unnoticed and without any meaningful impact. Her effort inspired me to write this short story of that event. Our conscience plays a significant part on our natural way of doing things. She could have thought to herself, if I don’t do this what difference would it make for the waste and the environment? So, while the world did not note this feat, her conscience is clear and it provided a witness to us who were with her, the person she is inside. The figurative heart of Laurie. (^_^).

Guyana celebrates its 52nd Independence celebrations. Youth week engagement included schools who celebrated in several different ways. Bernice Edwards a teacher of grade 8 students in response to students interest in future careers and the fact that from Grade 9 class they begin to stream into career choices wanted to engage students in an interactive way so that conversation on career choice is stimulating to them.

I was invited to explore how can that conversation with the students be done in a SALTy way. We agreed to a two-part engagement conversation: [1] Invite professional career personnel to share with the children why they chose their respective career and what it meant for them; [2] Have students in groups share their individual career and describe how their collective careers would impact society? Prior to the conversation, students were encouraged to research on their career choice.

Teacher Bernice introduces the professional personnel

The personnel who were invited mentioned the following:

The pilot and maintenance technician were both happy to being doing this because they are former students of the Cummingslodge Secondary School. Neighboring the community of Cummingslodge is an airport and as children they were fascinated with what takes place there and the in-out of planes from there. Their first employment opportunity was there and that led to their career dream being achieved.

The teacher emphasised, that like many of the students here, she wanted to be ‘like her teacher’, was her initial motivation. While she started as a teacher, she ventured into other job opportunities but all along teaching was on her mind and decided to pursue that by entering the teachers training college.

“My first choice was to be a doctor. I realized that to be a doctor, I would had to talk to people and that was something that I did not ‘fancy’. I chose to become an engineer. Over the years I realized that even though that was my choice I did several other things that even while being an engineer. I learned about business and administration, learn how to engage people and now I am even a commissioner with the Women and Gender Equality Commission. So, in spite of your career choice, you have to be open minded to other things that life may ‘throw at you’.” Renata Chuck A SAng

Group engagement

In small groups, students with support of one of the personnel, had a conversation on how will society benefit from their collective career choices. The students were invited to write and / or draw the impact on society. One group presented a before and after situation. Before: poor condition of infrastructure, poor health of members of community, uneducated people but that with their collective dream careers, the same community will be more attractive with better roads, houses, members will be more healthy and people will be more educated.

“Autry as I listen to your experience, I am reminded of the story of the candle and the dark room. One candle when lit, offers a glimpse of what is in the room while in darkness. However, if more than one candle at a time, is lit, the total strength of the once dark room is eventually revealed.” Tricia, a colleague with whom I shared the rewarding experience in the ‘City of Stars’ [Chiang Dao] and ‘City of City’ [Chiang mai], especially about the local response of the Municipality of TaWangtan over the period of 15 years. And I dare say that the simulation, exactly reveals the local response of the people of TaWangtan over their 15 years experience starting with the scourge of HIV/AIDS. As the municipality reduces the incidences of HIV and focused on ‘wellness’ the myths and all other negatives of this scourged changed to what I always termed ‘Living a healthier lifestyle’. This was a true representation of the shift from darkness to light within the TaWangtan municipality, a municipality that has a population of about 10,000 people, living in 4,000 households, in 13 villages.

Just over 15 years ago, within the municipality, the situation was so intense that there was one death per week related to HIV. The current chairman of the municipality started with the municipality’s effort as a volunteer and was subsequently invited to be a member of the municipality and then elected as chairman. He indicated that initially, the problem with HIV and it’s consequence was significant and serious concern on how to deal with the threat. The effort to address the concern met with resistance since HIV was considered a myth / traditional belief. The men especially were more concerned by the fact that they were being deprived of sex.

There were concerns about access to people to alert and sensitize them. The local christian ministry supported the local effort with much appreciation. A ‘trigger’ however, to this effort of meeting the hearts and minds of people was when a very handsome and popular male contracted the disease and died. This apparently touched many homes, individually; no one went to the funeral. His wife wanted to commit suicide. This was the inspiration needed!

“We took action together” said the Chairman.

The Municipality focused on a priority that was and still is a national policy and a wellbeing / wellness threat. The municipality benefited from several donors support, including collaboration between Buddhist and Christian communities, while the local health centre played a major role in the response. An active member of the municipality’s effort, is a lady who was infected with HIV when her daughter was 13 yrs old and now a son of that daughter is 13 years old [see grandson in picture below]. The grandson is an active member of community mobilization and a role model for young people nationally. Over time the incidence of HIV was significantly reduced and especially stigma related to this disease “What worked for us is the mobile education programme.” was the chairman’s assertion.

As the many candles began to be lit, the village became a model village with respect to addressing a serious problem as HIV. There were many visitors from all over the country and we were invited to several occasion to share our experience. This experience was overwhelming for us and led to another problem. We neglected ourselves.

More candles began to be lit with a team of 5-7 persons within the municipality who took the initiative to address self-neglect, including:

Allowance to about 500 infected persons and introduction to ARVs, helped;

This made it easier to support the infected and affected with other support, including psychosocial;

Information sharing became easier;

Posters were strategically placed and people began to talk about HIV more openly;

Counseling on how people can live normal lives and interact with community and be appreciated for who you are give hope;

Home visits and home care also worked, including preparing the elderly to adapt to changing needs as the age; The municipality provided transportation for hospital visits and home visits;

More recently there was the introduction of the ‘Volunteer to share happiness’ programme. They provide all sorts of care such as treating wounds, gifts and foods, happiness for ‘stayed at homes’ and donations.

Training in religious teaching;

Vocational needs training, such as massage, biscuits making, clothes making, food making, promoting better education for children programmes;

Vocational training includes learning about cultural or lifestyle interaction without judgement but that contributes to community development and sustainable actions are more important. In this pursuit, inclusion is practiced. Young people, including kids were involved in programmes by stimulating interest. Making local desserts, for example led to curiosity which led to interest at another level. Eventually, they began to like and love the interaction and this became ingrained into the hearts and minds of young people and more sustainable response.

Now people are adapting to living ‘healthier lifestyles’. Technology supported the local effort.

Transfer begin with ‘mindset change’ with ‘S’ of SALT during the stimulation process. People begin to think differently; A different Way of Thinking [WoT]. Evidence of this is obvious when members of communities engage in conversations of Are we human? What makes us Human?; Identifying strengths and sharing common concerns and hopes, leading to a common dream. Members of these communities are motivated by these engagements.

During this period, there is learning which leads to action. This phase is considered our learning which influences, in us, a different way of Working [WoW]. Transformation within self and eventually, communities are taking place. This collective actions [WoW] is further influenced during the Self-Assessment phase when communities identify where they are on the scale of competence [levels 1-5] and then, where they would want be within a certain time period [short, medium or long term]. Here is where the SMART concept is best applied. The movement from the level where we are now to where we want to be is delineated by a SMART action plan for each practice. SMART: S - Specific; M - Measurable; A - Appropriate; R - Realistic; T - Time bound.

S - refers to specific actions that can take us from one level to the next;

M - that these actions must be measurable;

A - the actions must be appropriate to achieving the next level and to the common dream;

R - the actions must also be realistic in nature;

T - the action must take place within some time frame.

Following are links to some SMART actions plans where communities take ownership for their self development in responsible ways:

Carre d’As:

A small community of 15 families on the west coast of Mauritius considered marginalized and vulnerable. Le Pont du Tamarinier supports this community to acquire homes and to develop ways of building stronger families. Leading up to the SMART plan the community did a collective dream and identify practices [big steps or stepping stones] to accomplish their common dream.

Mindset Change! “...if we have not made a mistake, means, we might not be doing anything. If we make the same mistake twice, then we may not be learning from our mistakes.” Hon. Sydney Aleacock. This encouragement of introspection came to members of the 17th National Toshaos Council conference. This encouragement follows the thought “if want different results [from our action], then we cannot be doing the same things we did in the past that yielded unfavourable results.” Einstein. Wanting, therefore to do things differently requires a mindset change and a conscious desire to do so. When we consistently think along a certain path, it influences how we act / work. And when we act along a certain path in a systematic way this way of working becomes our natural way of working. The week’s conversation by the more than 200 Toshaos unearthed lots of strengths and inherent qualities as leaders. So when Madam Garrido-Lowe stimulated a conversation on what do you see in your leaders, the value of leaders was remarkable. Hereunder is a list of qualities of a good leader / leaders as determined by members of the conference. Contributions came from ALL, executive members and other members, including the women Toshaos.
Madam Garrido-Lowe could have presented what is meant by being a good leader to the conference but used the opportunity to let them identify what a good leader means for them. Their identifying these characteristics indicate Awareness of what good leadership means to them and that they take ownership of these characteristics and being good leaders themselves. They see these qualities as being important for the success of the NTC and support to the wider local indigenous community. However, there is no superhuman among these Toshaos so not one of them will possess ALL of these characteristics individually. Of course, the descriptors may be overlapping in many instances or the same thing expressed by a different word. It would be nice [an opportunity, really] to continue the conversation on this subject, especially on how can we cultivate these qualities individually, building on those that we already possess, bringing out the latent ones. And how can we include this in a succession plan for future leaders of the National Toshaos Council.

We can place in the competence framework and have measured progress of achieving ‘being a good leader.’

The competence framework is based on the levels of competence as follows:

Level 1: We are aware of this but we do not act;

Level 2: We React to this; we act on it sometimes;

Level 3: We make a conscious decision of act on this;

Level 4: We systematically act on this or do so continuously;

Level 5: We naturally do this. It is a natural part of how we work.

Doing the competence framework is doing a self-assessment on the issue and it happens like this.

Mindset%20Change.pdfCommunities such as NTC and Village Council have a candid conversation on being a good leader based on an agreed level 5 and identify which of the four levels they are at and then describe that level. After that they identify which level they would like to go to and describe what that means to them.

The same conversation could be applied for other issues such as:

In marketing we learn that when a customer is satisfied, that excitement is shared with on average 6/7 persons. That happens naturally! When a community share common experiences and learn from those experiences they too would share their learning. The sharing could happen naturally or influenced. A Learning Festival is a tool allowed for conscious sharing and learning (^_^). During the Learning Festival held in Mauritius in April 2016, 30 foreigners from 13 countries immersed themselves into mauritian communities and together there was sharing and learning. Communities share and learn and eventually reflect on what they can do differently or EVEN better from that experience. Transfer is an outcome of the subsequent actions from learning and sharing. We want to stimulate other communities we feel can benefit from our experiences.

In fact the Learning Festival emanated from transfer which started with the invitation of MCBFF to stimulate a common response around a core issue, drugs! The experiences and learning were transferred to stimulate local response around other common concerns as alcohol, marginalized, organization strengthening concerns and with vulnerable communities which eventually led to the Mauritius Learning Festival.

The post Learning Festival period witnessed a continued moment in transfer of local response of stimulating communities to take ownership and being responsible for self-development using inherent strengths. The Poste Lafayette is one experience that continued from stimulation during the Learning Festival. Other transfer that happened naturally since April are Group A / Lacaz A engagement of SALT with volunteers and acuiel; Anges du soliel to strengthen way of thinking and working with volunteers of that NGO; engagement of communities of women of l’escalier, Souiliac and the community of African Township.

In reflection the women of L’escalier indicated how different they are:

How different are we since we started this journey?

We have learned what our values are and who we are;

We are at peace with ourselves;

We have learned:

how to manage our anger

how to realize our own dream

There was an invitation for these communities to engage in a ‘Bring-and-Share’. That event took place at Blue Bay. Here are photos of what transpired between three communities that have each come together to cope with life challenges but could find time to share experiences that really contributed to motivation. How do we balance our traditional way of doing things with the fast-paced world, especially with a younger generation that is 'addicted' to this world? Must say sometimes I contemplate powerpoint as well (^_^). So, now I wanted to experience what I am about to experience. Assurance of the need was that the community forms part of a Poverty Eradication Network cell and some people may not be able to read and / nor write but will be able to communicate with pictures / drawing.

We arrived early to set up our technology, laptop and projector after the pleasantries, introduction of SALT by powerpoint, said to myself "okay!" Autry was introduced. I had mentioned quietly to the third member [Yumella] of our party, the chairs should have been in a circular arrangement. Her response, "well lets get them to do it." Then, as I would usually do, adjust what we plan to do. I appreciated everyone [approximately 25 adults and 10 children] for making the effort to come out for this event. "I would like to begin 'your tasting SALT' with a question, what are you most proud of? think for a moment and I would like you have a conversation of this question in groups?" The intention was to change the seating arrangements, THEN the electricity went. Thanks to technology, many persons in the room had portable with torch, within seconds there was enough light to continue the conversation in the groups. It was then I realized that the children was in a group by themselves with an adult.

The feedback in the dim-lighted room was remarkable. We asserted that 'you are truly proud of who you are, since each group had similar indicators of what you are proud of."

The Are you human and why? as well as the 'Paper Pull" exercises were conducted in the semi-lighted condition with zero impact as to positive responses from the community members.

The next exercise was the "concerns and hopes" THEN appeared the electricity (^_^). On the 'heart shaped' paper individuals expressed one concern and one hope. The NOW well-lit room was gripped with silence, listening attentively, appreciation and support as hearts were poured out with respect to concerns and hopes. "I am a proud step-mom of two children[late teens / early adult] and I would do anything to give my children an education. I cannot read and every time I have to travel it is a concern because I cannot read the signs on the buses to know which one to join based on where I want to go. Please get an education she implored!" In tears the two young people supported their mom and shared their concern and hope.

On the 'Paper Pull' exercise one child response on what does this exercise mean for you? "it teaches us that it is easy to break something but not easy to put back." Another individual "It teach me that we should think twice before we do something especially negative things.

The AER was met with similar emotional sharing and invitation to continue with SALT.

.....and this is why I appreciate SALT (^_^)

I remember the words vividly "..happy couples make happy families, happy families make happy communities, happy communities make a happy nation and happy nations make a happy world.." of the song. But there is another saying "..a house is not a home.." When Le Pont du Tamarinier had the opportunity to support vulnerable / marginalized communities with houses, this was what it hoped for, making houses, homes. It dream created with support of SALT is "Equal opportunity for all peoples, enabling accomplishment of individual dreams and that they give back positive to society." Two of the seven practices to accomplish the dream are [1] Greater community involvement and [2] Family strengthened efforts.

Since Pont du Tamarinier adopted SALT as its Way of Thinking and Working, the three communities it engages have tasted SALT and are stimulated at the community levels. Pont du Tamarinier is now taking a conscious effort to strengthen individual families in an effort to greater community involvement as well. "We will experience home visits as a TEAM so that we have a common understanding of its use and potential." This experience focused on two questions [1] What are you most proud of? and [2] What has the experience with Le Pont du Tamarinier meant for you?

This saying brought some deep reflection of how true this seem in daily life. It seem as the ‘root cause’ of so many differences in human interaction. What if we are stimulated differently? Recently, at the concluding day of the Mauritius Learning Festival, participants shared what will I do differently resulting from the week’s engagement. These two reflections stood out:

I will listen carefully because this week I heard, “I feel secure because they listen to me.” When I listen carefully to someone, that person feels important; and

I will pay more attention to ‘small stories’.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/11nvKStCMXu8akWTF1jU-r-NZC1327TuHCFrLXxncHt0/edit

“I will pay more attention to ‘small stories’” says volume about the importance of listening without using the word listen. These two reflections indicate what is constituted to be important in the process of Community-to-Community transfer. The two participants were inspired to action, to do differently, as a result of their listening.

Paying more than the usual attention listening also contributes to a deepening of our understanding of each as indicated by executive members and staff of MACOSS during a SALT engagement.

We shared different perspectives as staff and executive members but we understand each other better from today’s exercise.

Every individual has good intentions, but in practice, expressing this could be challenging. Today’s engagement helped us to understand our humanity, even better;

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-wZXzrP8yhh66STbXmK7qF020l8UBN6J_ZsypUx-REI/edit

The result of understanding each other or as humans EVEN better could only be because of listening to understand.

So while we motivated to action and understanding each other even better, listening also contributes to one’s inspiration as was Marilyn, during a SALT engagement between members of the Poste Lafayette community and a group of leaders fostering to make SALT as a major contributor to sustainable local response in Mauritius.

I was inspired with Pamela and Jean-Noel’s story; Marilyn of Poste Lafayette

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Gfy-tKUs2fsK1epZyiKJGCW-SJfcRlrmpiDBlwWAldg/edit

The ‘L’ of SALT is intrinsically interrelated to the other letters. So ‘listen’ of SALT is not exclusive of the cumulative value of SALT. (^_^) In our effort to stimulate sustainable local response we encourage a ‘community conversation’. That conversation can only be meaningful when the members began to listen to each other. There is an example of that. In Mauritius, the Mauritius Commercial Bank Forward Foundation wanted different stakeholders to have a common conversation even they were, each different things for the common purpose, the problem of drugs. When CLCP/SALT was invited to inspire that conversation, here is what happened. Of the ten practices identified to accomplish the common dream “A safe and secured Mauritius, where its citizens consider people affected by drugs with respect and dignity, free from stigma and discrimination,” one was the following:

We develop and practice a culture of listening and appreciating without judgement

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mByqV7oiyb2KMyIJ_dVbY4QIiL6KWckQyEAQogGlnrQ/edit#

The community of 13 NGOs and Public sector agencies also described what that practices is like at level 2 and at level 5.

We took action as a platform on this practice, and a big part of the platform members were trained on stigma and discrimination. We have grown and we are still learning. As long as there are platform members who feel discriminated or judged by other members, we can progress

Every single member of this platform feels valued and can express themselves safe in the knowledge that they are not being judged.

Effective listening to each other, helps in the identification of who we are as a community, which leads to a common dream, and as we develop the practices and SMART action plan. The crux of listening is when communities’ members have a candid conversation to identify which level they are at for a specific practice. The candid conversation result to the particular level by consensus. As we are well aware, voting is not encouraged here, even as that might be a temptation.

Community conversation is key for communities to take take ownership and being responsible. This is local response. When we seek to stimulate local response with community conversation, one of the stimulating question is are we human and why? Members of every community are intrigue by the question and their own response. They agree to continue 'community conversations' on that human level. Mauritius Council for Social Services (MACOSS) shared in this experience when it held an empowerment session for leaders working in the 'disability' sector. There was the invitation to introduce SALT as a tool by which the sector can stimulate conversation on issues / concerns that lead to amicable resolution. There were more than 50 participants. In two hours we were able to engage three SALT activities. [1] SALT a Way of Thinking and Way of Working, [2] are we human and why? [3] Envisioning. To engage a candid discussion on 'humanness' it was decided that to get meaningful engagement the participants do so in small groups. In ten minutes discourse we derived more productivity with small groups than with the larger group. There was no significant difference between group's description of why are we human.What stood out was that the participants do not necessarily know each other as one reflection stated "Even though we do not know each other but it does not make any difference in the groups." Some other reflections included: We speak to each other on a human level We see each other as a fellow human being We understand each other We respect the opinion of each other We express our own but also different opinions We have a passion for God We give opportunity for others to say what they would like to say There was a passion for godliness The overall reflection was that "We now have a dream. We cannot leave that just like that. We need to continue this SALT as a way forward." MACOSS agreed to engage the same partners to continue the discussion on how can we achieve our dream that was achieved from the envisioning session.

‘Ready Pull’ exercise: The idea of this exercise was to stimulate a mindset that would relax the participants and make them comfortable to accomplish the intended purpose. An exercise where participants are placed into groups and given a piece of paper [large enough for each group member to be able to have a hold on, eg A4]. Each member of the group was required to have a hold on the paper and the Facilitator indicates when they should ALL pull on the paper. This action is done 2-3 times, using the largest piece of paper after tearing it apart from pulling the previous time. Then the BIG REQUEST! Kindly put the pieces back together! Members of each group work to put the pieces together to form the whole piece in the original state. The Facilitator[s] facilitate a discussion on what worked for members of the group putting the pieces together, to ascertain what contributed to the group’s success. While the reasons for the other team not being successful would also highlight some strengths of that group, as well. The MAJOR lesson however is that as a group of human being we can work together as a TEAM.

However, this ‘Ready Pull’ exercise has a deeper purpose. Now that the COMMUNITY of participants are relaxed and thinking in terms of ‘togetherness’, unity, team, we ask the question

“What did this exercise REALLY mean for you?” [it is good to encourage a moment for reflection before starting the share].

With tears and some comforting by colleagues, here are three experiences:

“I miss my baby daughter! I am enjoying this country and the work I am doing. My Intern has a few more months and I know she is taken care of. I think of her and other family often but doing this exercise today moved me to tears! It caused me to think of them dearly, am sorry! Tearing the paper apart is like families being torn apart and it may not be easy to bring back together” Intern LPDT.

“Alcoholism within the family could tear the family apart and because of love, the family works dearly to bring that member back to his / her family so that we can be happy together. This is not always easy. This exercise symbolises that. It may be easy to tear things apart but it is not easy to put back together. Effort is needed but even this may not achieve, how we were before!” Mother of Lalmattie village.

“ I love my son but he is now addicted to drugs and that is hurting us as a family. He is on methadone, but even that is not easy for him and us. Doing this exercise, helps me to understand how broken our family is. We are making effort to bring him back to us but it is hard, like puting back the pieces of paper together.” Mother of families of people of methadone, Group Renaisance de Mahebourgh

With the support of the PILS (Prévention Information Lutte contre le Sida) NGO and the Global Fund, the AILES NGO is currently benefiting from the help of Peer Educators to contribute to their dream: “An AILES comprised of different regional neighbourhood houses where respect and dignity are provided in a safe healthy environment; supporting and accompanying people living with HIV and people who use drugs to achieve their full potential.”

Based on its experience with SALT, AILES feels that the approach will make a difference with the attitude and work of Peer Educators. AILES invited the Constellation to support the training of Peer Educators.

Peer Educators found SALT stimulating and they were eager to continue with activities after they 'tasted' it. They appreciated where it was taking them. They felt that they could use SALT to engage communities, to stimulate and nurture them to get the results needed. To accomplish this however, they agree that more than just stimulation was needed.

They felt and understood the importance/value of the work they are doing now as Peer Educators. Most of them are or were drug users and they have empathy/compassion for those they now have the opportunity to serve and especially are concerned about youths, so prevention is foremost in their minds. The stepping stone/practice: "We have an approach to stimulate and nurture communities and to ensure that communities trust us" speaks VOLUMES... Here is where SALT means a lot to them. They understand the communities that they have to work within, and what drugs/HIV/hepatitis are doing in these communities.

While they understand the magnitude of their work and the responsibility they have ......they are considerate that family life is important to them too......so we want to accomplish our work with good results without compromising family 'quality time' for the same reasons as mentioned above.....they do not want families to be in vulnerable situations....they had enough of that.....but have compassion and understand the NEED of the communities they work with.

They are appreciative of the opportunity with AILES, hence their dream: “Working with AILES to stimulate and nurture communities to become free from social ills as we enjoy more leisure time and separating our work life from home life” which also fits the dream of AILES.....by the way they do not yet know AILES dream which was done way back in the first quarter of 2015.

A group of differently-abled persons took to be very engaging and agreed to meet every Monday for SALT. Their dream was to live comfortably in their Cheshire Home where they can pursue individual dreams. One wa to achieve their dream was to have specific time for games and as a starter decided on a domino competition. The idea of the competition started with Michel who went to church and then to the supermarket where he bought a new pack of dominoes. In reflection he said; "I am happy with this new pack of dominoes because the older pack had many marked dominoes and cheating took place on a high level" (^_^). So who was the champion we asked with the older pack of dominoes? There was laughter when different names were named and one person mooted the idea that a competition be held to ascertain the winner with unmarked dominoes. It was agreed....

SALT was applied to do self-assessment of LPDT as an organization, but also conducted a Learning Event for staff, volunteers and community leaders. as part of the SMART action plan emanating from that Learning Event, the team desired to share the SALT experience with other communities especially with sister organizations doing similar work in the Riviere Noire district. A second learning Event was held. Thirteen persons were invited and thirteen turned up the first day of the four day event. Nine members from that event formed what may be called the core group, who created a common dream and five practices (Stepping stones) towards the dream (vision). One of the Stepping stones was "Fostering a TEAM spirit." The initial SMART action towards the accomplishment of that practice was a "Bring and Share." A "Bring and Share" is where everyone brings something to eat and that shared among the group.

What Actually happened?

- everyone of the 'core' members, turned up on time and brought something as planned;

- we enjoyed lunch together and shared valuable moments;

- we finalized plans for two other immediate SMART actions;

- we re-energized each other and are now motivated to accomplish our immediate SMART actions;

On Thursday, a group of parents of Tamarinier met to plan for their bingo. This bingo is a SMART Action aimed stimulating improved communication among neighbours. After some intense planning amid jokes and hearty laughter one of my co-Facilitators turned to me, Autry, Marlyn would like to know if we do After Experience Reflection immediately following the event the same night? I looked up and they all laughed n laughed.
