This year (2018) approx. 30 employees of the Dutch Council for Refugees will be on a learning journey to apply SALT in the groups they (will) facilitate.

One group in Amsterdam started in February with home visits to newcomers who have received the keys to their new homes a couple of months ago.

The city council provided housing to 86 refugees (children included) from 12 countries who live among the residents that have been living in Amsterdam or in the Netherlands for a much longer time, some of them from migrant families (historically one out of three residents of Amsterdam is born abroad). Now everybody got to get to know each other, this is a new neighborhood that was built up literally from the water, an artificial island was created by the city of Amsterdam. All residents are 'in the same boat' as to familiarizing themselves with the area and with their neighbors. That is how we came up with the name Common Ground for our project.

Now that everybody has furnished their houses, it is time to start having conversations among each other and stimulate refugees to join a community meeting. Regular community gatherings have been taken place for quite a while; they started even before the houses were built. As a result of a lot of people (volunteers, employees from various agencies etc.) teaming up, this was the first time that newcomers from Syria and African countries attended the Meet-up. One of the residents (Winny) said, while introducing her neighbors from Nigeria and Ethiopia: "Once you know your neighbors, you feel safe where you live". Winny managed to voice shared hopes and common concerns: many people agreed and nodded their heads.

Thanks to the amazing SALT team and the spontaneous support from community workers it was a great success, and a starting point for more encounters and conversations to establish our Common Ground, our shared humanity.

Nederlandse versie onderaan

Since 2015, a large group of people started to ask for refuge in the Netherlands. For some people this created fear: how will we be able to live together? We come from different worlds: will this work?

Then we heard the story of Beho, where refugees in a small Belgian town took the lead to invite their Belgian neighbours to get to know each other, share stories, skills and help each other out.

This inspired us to start looking for strengths of refugees in the Netherlands. What is their dream for the future? And for those who were granted permission to stay here, how can they collaborate with Dutch citizens to create a society everyone likes to live in?

From the 2nd to the 4th of May 2017, we got together with a group of 16 professionals and volunteers working for the Dutch Refugee Council. Big part of our group were former refugees who are now working to help others.

We visited a few inspiring groups of refugees in the Netherlands to discover their strengths. This inspired our group to rethink the work we are doing.

The question became: how can we listen to people's dreams and take them seriously? How can we support refugees in supporting each other to reach their dreams, and connect them to our networks?

We commited to exploring this together in a period of 6 months starting from May 2017, each of us by applying SALT and CLCP in our work. Since May, we have started 7 local projects where refugees come together and take an active role in designing their future in the Netherlands. These are the projects:

NEDERLANDSE VERSIE:

Click here for a short video about the project

2. Actiegroep Eigen Huis Hoofddorp

'Decent houses for decent men' in Hoofddorp, a group of men from different nationalities has been living together in a temporary house for over one year now. What brought them together in SALTy conversations, was their shared dream of finding their own house in the Netherlands, so they could start their own families, learn Dutch faster and find a job in their own area of expertise.

Besides the regular services VluchtelingenWerk offers on housing, job searching and learning Dutch, our facilitation team has joined these men in their conversations about the future they want. It was not always easy to keep the faith for this group, as they felt they depended on the local governement to find a solution for their situation. And it was a challenge to understand how to influence the people who have power over your situation, being in a foreign country.

Through SALTy conversations and lots of hand written letters to the mayor, the group finally succeeded in realizing their dream. Before October 2018, they will all move to their new appartments in Hoofddorp. This result encouraged them to join hands in taking better care of the current house they share: sharing the cleaning tasks, improving the wifi connection and continuing to have conversations about their future in the Netherlands.

Not every powerful group has a website and to name them all would make this list too long. But to get a glimpse of what is happening, you can click on the titles below and learn about a few communities that truely inspired us:

No job? Look for strengths, link & support: the Broekriem Check out on this link how a group of unemployed people supports each other to stay positive and find new opportunities when looking for a job. Today they have grown in a professional organisation that is organising meetups and events all over the Netherlands.

Looking for strengths brought this neighborhood back to life: de Meevaart This community center today is vibrating with healthy, fun, social, jummy, cultural, practical, artistic and always colorful activities from people in the neighborhood for their neighbors. Quite exceptional when you think this neighborhood was once targeted by the government as heavily challenged and with little future. Starting to look for strengths, then connecting them, was what made the difference. Now everyone wants to learn from what they did. You can watch a short video here
