I carried out the Malaria self assessment for my family in Bo, Southern Sierra Leone on the 27th April 2009.
It was strange for me to gather my family for an assessment. So all of them including my wife were surprised. One of the target that came out of the assessment was the need for my family to know what is malaria including transmission, prevention and treatment. With my medical background, I handled that area that same night with everyone going to bed satisfied. Few days after that, my daughter who was part of the assessment process, called to tell me about her just ended English Language exams for the West Africa School Certificate. She told me that the day after our assessment process she surprisingly met Malaria related questions in her English exams. She almost accused me of having a pre knowledge of their exams as a whole of a ‘Part B’ of their exams was on Malaria, transmission, treatment and prevention. She is expecting a high grade in that part of the exams.
The lesson I learnt from this is to follow the saying 'it is rather late than never'. Though I did the family assessment only on the 27th April 2009, it was good that I did it as it helped my family especially my daughter.
Regards
David
